put words in/into sb's mouth

?

to suggest that someone meant one thing when really they meant another

Stop putting words in my mouth - I didn't say you looked fat in the red dress - I merely said you looked very slim in the black!

Colleague A: It is Friday afternoon and the boss said we could leave early on Friday.

Colleague B: Don't put words in her mouth. She said we could leave early on Friday if we had finished all our work. Is all your work finished?

Colleague A: Not completely.

Colleague B: Then you had better stay and finish it.
