老外說(shuō)leave room，可不是叫你“離開(kāi)房間”，那是什么意思？

room是“房間”

但在口語(yǔ)中，

leave room往往不是“離開(kāi)房間”的意思!

這就有可能是你對(duì)leave和room的認(rèn)識(shí)還不夠

一leave room

leave除了“離開(kāi)”，還可以表示“留下”

room除了“房間”還表示“空間”

所以

leave room for sth

就相當(dāng)于為某事或某物留有空間、機(jī)會(huì)

類(lèi)似于room for manoeuvre這個(gè)詞組

the opportunity to change your plans or choose between different ways of doing something

回旋的余地

例：

The law in this area is very strict and doesn't allow us much room for manoeuvre.

這個(gè)地方的法律非常嚴(yán)格，我們很難有回旋的余地。

The Fed proposal would still leave some room for flexibility.

美聯(lián)儲(chǔ)的提議仍將留有一些余地。

In its design, the exchange left some room for improvement.

二leave the room

to excuse oneself from present company, typically temporarily
