這個(gè)引喻來自紙牌賭博，我們知道，賭徒們總是玩興很大，挑燈夜戰(zhàn)為家常便飯，這句話的意思是玩牌贏的錢還不夠買蠟燭，也就是說是賠本的買賣，自然“得不償失"，"不值得做"了。了解了它的來源后，有一點(diǎn)需要提醒，這個(gè)句子只用否定形式，一般不說 the game is worth the candle。有時(shí)也使用它的問句形式：
