流行病 ≠ popular disease
popular /?pɑ?pj?l?r/
adj.
For the first time, the World Health Organization called the disease caused by the novel coronavirus, COVID-19, a pandemic.
pandemic /pæn?dem.?k/
adj. (of a disease) existing in almost all of an area or in almost all of a group of people, animals, or plants
In some parts of the world malaria is still pandemic.
n. a pandemic disease
a pandemic of influenza
an influenza pandemic
To understand what is a pandemic , we have to talk about what an outbreak, an epidemic and a pandemic mean.
outbreak
n. a time when something suddenly begins, especially a disease or something elsedangerous or unpleasant
an outbreak of cholera/food poisoning/rioting/war
An outbreak occurs when there is an increase, often suddenly, of the number of cases of that disease, above the usual expected number of cases in a particular area.
epidemic /ep? dem?k/
n. the appearance of a particular disease in a large number of people at the same time
a flu epidemic
An outbreak is the term used for a more limited area, and epidemic is used for larger, more widespread populations. Epidemics are usually confined to one city or region, or even a country.
A pandemic is an epidemic that has spread over several countries and continents, and affects a large group of people.
