清醒一點(diǎn)！“pie in the sky”真的不是“天上掉餡餅”！

pie in the sky源于一首歌。1911年，歌曲“The rebel girl and the preacher and the slave”開始被大家廣為傳唱，這首歌意在諷刺當(dāng)時(shí)的“救世軍”國際基督教組織。

“救世軍”提倡塵世受苦，認(rèn)為只有這樣才能進(jìn)入天堂。所以，創(chuàng)作人就在歌中寫道：牧師們每天晚上都要出門傳教，告訴你什么是對什么是錯(cuò)，但你若問是否有吃的，他們就會用甜蜜的聲音回答：等到你進(jìn)入天國，一定會有吃的 You'll get pie in the sky when you die(等你死后你就會在天上得到餡餅);現(xiàn)在要工作、要祈禱。

所以pie in the sky漸漸被人們所接受，用來形容“空頭支票”、“虛幻不能實(shí)現(xiàn)的空想”。

例：

His dream to become president is just a pie in the sky.

成為總統(tǒng)是他的黃粱美夢。

I don't believe the plan will succeed, it is just pie in the sky.

我不相信這個(gè)計(jì)劃能成功，它根本無法實(shí)現(xiàn)。

pipe dream

18、19世紀(jì)的英國，上流社會吸食鴉片并不罕見。當(dāng)時(shí)，pipe(煙斗)常被引申為“鴉片”，如短語on the pipe就很形象地形容了以“鴉片”為生的癮君子，而pipe dream則用來比喻“鴉片上癮者陷入幻覺時(shí)的狀態(tài)”。大約在1895年左右，pipe dream正式進(jìn)入英語詞匯，不過在書面語中，pipe dream不再與鴉片有任何瓜葛，而是用來形容“白日夢”、“幻想”、“空想”。

例：

Otherwise, the drive for the four modernizations will become a pipe dream.

否則，搞四個(gè)現(xiàn)代化就會變成一句空話。

fool's paradise

源自莎士比亞的戲劇《羅米歐與朱麗葉》(Romeo and Juliet) : but first let me tell ye, if ye should lead her into a fool's paradise, as they say, it were a very gross kind of behavior…(可是我要先明白地對您說一句，要是真像人家說的，您想騙她做一場春夢，那可真是一件頂壞的行為……)。

意思就是to be happy because you do not know or will not accept how bad a situation really is因?yàn)槟悴恢阑蚴悄悴唤邮苷鎸?shí)的糟糕的情況而發(fā)出的愉悅開心的狀態(tài)，沉浸在虛幻的幸福之中
