清醒一點！“pie in the sky”真的不是“天上掉餡餅”！

pie in the sky源于一首歌。1911年，歌曲“The rebel girl and the preacher and the slave”開始被大家廣為傳唱，這首歌意在諷刺當時的“救世軍”國際基督教組織。

“救世軍”提倡塵世受苦，認為只有這樣才能進入天堂。所以，創(chuàng)作人就在歌中寫道：牧師們每天晚上都要出門傳教，告訴你什么是對什么是錯，但你若問是否有吃的，他們就會用甜蜜的聲音回答：等到你進入天國，一定會有吃的 You'll get pie in the sky when you die(等你死后你就會在天上得到餡餅);現(xiàn)在要工作、要祈禱。

所以pie in the sky漸漸被人們所接受，用來形容“空頭支票”、“虛幻不能實現(xiàn)的空想”。

例：

His dream to become president is just a pie in the sky.

成為總統(tǒng)是他的黃粱美夢。

I don't believe the plan will succeed, it is just pie in the sky.

我不相信這個計劃能成功，它根本無法實現(xiàn)。

pipe dream

18、19世紀的英國，上流社會吸食鴉片并不罕見。當時，pipe(煙斗)常被引申為“鴉片”，如短語on the pipe就很形象地形容了以“鴉片”為生的癮君子，而pipe dream則用來比喻“鴉片上癮者陷入幻覺時的狀態(tài)”。大約在1895年左右，pipe dream正式進入英語詞匯，不過在書面語中，pipe dream不再與鴉片有任何瓜葛，而是用來形容“白日夢”、“幻想”、“空想”。

例：

Otherwise, the drive for the four modernizations will become a pipe dream.

否則，搞四個現(xiàn)代化就會變成一句空話。

fool's paradise

源自莎士比亞的戲劇《羅米歐與朱麗葉》(Romeo and Juliet) : but first let me tell ye, if ye should lead her into a fool's paradise, as they say, it were a very gross kind of behavior…(可是我要先明白地對您說一句，要是真像人家說的，您想騙她做一場春夢，那可真是一件頂壞的行為……)。

意思就是to be happy because you do not know or will not accept how bad a situation really is因為你不知道或是你不接受真實的糟糕的情況而發(fā)出的愉悅開心的狀態(tài)，沉浸在虛幻的幸福之中

You've been living in a fool's paradise. How long do you think we can go on spending our money without earning more?
