"beat goose"是在虐待動物？這是要把歪果仁笑死嗎！

goose是“鵝”，用cook one's own goose表示“斷送某人的計劃或前途”，可能源自另一個短語kill the goose that lays the golden eggs(殺雞取卵)。

例：

A promising young man may cook his own goose by mixing with bad guys.

有希望的年輕人如果跟壞人混在了一起，就會斷送了自己的前途。

beat goose在口語中表示“雙手插在腋下取暖”。也作beat the booby。

例：

Have you ever seen him beating goose?

你看到過他雙手插在腋下取暖嗎?

get the goose在俚語中表示“被喝倒彩”、“被噓”。與此相反的是give the goose“作噓聲反對”、“喝倒彩”、“使加快速度”。

例：

The actress got the goose on the stage.

那位女演員在舞臺被喝倒彩了。

wild-goose chase字面意思就是“野鵝追逐”，其實是很難追到的，所以用來指“白費力”、“徒勞無益的追求”，跟我們常說的歇后語“竹籃打水一場空”近似。

例：

It turned out to be a wild-goose chase.

結(jié)果證明這只不過是一場徒勞。
