A study in 2016 found that just 19% of white 17-year-olds in Britain were short-sighted. But lifestyle plays a big role. A report by the World Health Organisation says the genetic contribution is “considered small”. To the extent that genes are involved, they “may determine susceptibility to environmental factors”. These are often a lack of outdoor activity and excessive “near work”, ie, too much time staring at close objects. The combination of an exam-crazed culture with the rapid spread of smartphones and computer-game technology explains much of China’s problem.

　　1. affliction英 [əˈflɪkʃn] 美 [əˈflɪkʃn] 本意是“病痛，苦惱，折磨”，這里需要聯(lián)系前文來理解。前面一直在說的是學(xué)生近視高發(fā)的問題，所以這個affliction具體指“近視”。

　　1. 同義詞替換：Myopia美[maɪˈoʊpiə]，n. 可以表示“近視”。“矯正近視”就可以說to correct myopia;

　　4. 翻譯思維：Myopia is more common among East Asians than among white people直譯就是“近視在東亞人中比在白人中更普遍”，但是這么說有些別扭，than比較級翻譯為“相比”，所以可以說“相比白人，東亞人近視更普遍”，這樣更符合漢語表達(dá)習(xí)慣。

　　第三句通過數(shù)據(jù)舉例說明白人近視率較低。第三句：

　　1. 固定句型：a study found that ...是外刊中一個非常常見的句型，一般翻譯為“一項研究發(fā)現(xiàn)，……”。它可以替換為：a study showed/revealed/suggested that，還可以說according to a study。

　　所以原文A study in 2016 found that也可以改寫為：

　　According to a study in 2016, ...

　　如果是人/機(jī)構(gòu)組織所做的研究用by引出，即a study by ... found that。如金融時報上的這句話：

　　Diets high in fat can throw off the body's internal clock, a new study by researchers at Northwestern University has found.

　　美國西北大學(xué)(Northwestern University)研究員的一項新研究發(fā)現(xiàn)，攝入高脂肪食物可能會擾亂人體生物鐘。

　　今天的A study in 2016 found that即“2016年的一項研究發(fā)現(xiàn)，”。

　　2. 連字符：17-year-olds指17歲的青少年。注意17-year-olds中old后面加s，指的是人，而不是年齡。

　　還比如，13- and 17-year-olds就是13到17歲青少年。如果單獨說“一個17歲少年”就可以說a 17-year-old。

　　3. 高齋翻譯思維：數(shù)字放在后面。所以是英國17歲白人青少年中近視者僅占19%。

　　第四句指出其實個人生活方式對近視影響較大。第四句：

　　But lifestyle plays a big role.

　　但其實生活方式有著重要影響。

　　1. 名詞單復(fù)數(shù)：lifestyle是一個抽象名詞，不可數(shù)，如：

　　The players had to change their daily routine and lifestyle.

　　這些運動員不得不改變他們的日常生活習(xí)慣和方式。

　　所以原文直接lifestyle。

　　如果lifestyle前面有形容詞，在說“一種怎樣的生活方式”就要加冠詞，比如“一種健康的生活方式”a healthy lifestyle。

　　2. 固定表達(dá)：play a big role。play a big role是固定表達(dá)，意思是“扮演重要角色，發(fā)揮重要作用”。也可以說play a vital/key/major role/part。

　　3. 英語寫作句型：在英語寫作中，如果要說一個東西的影響或引出因果關(guān)系，可以用plays a role/part in，如經(jīng)濟(jì)學(xué)人這句：

　　This lack of transparency played a big part in the financial crisis

　　缺乏透明度對金融危機(jī)的發(fā)生起了很大的作用。

　　接下來第五句和第六句繼續(xù)引用世衛(wèi)組織的一份報告說明遺傳因素對近視的影響并不大，并提出遺傳或許只能影響人對環(huán)境因素的敏感性。第五、六句：
