　　John Donne出生在倫敦一個(gè)富有的天主教商人家庭，曾在牛津和劍橋接受高等教育，后到倫敦學(xué)習(xí)法律。1601年，在議會工作期間，他因與埃格頓夫人的侄女私奔并結(jié)婚而被革職，并遭逮捕。出獄后生活潦倒，拋棄仕宦夢改信國教，于1615年成為牧師。從1621年至死，Donne任倫敦圣·保羅大教堂的教長。他任教職期間作了大量布道演講，后結(jié)集出版，成為英國散文精品。
　　作為玄學(xué)派大師，Donne走的是一條以形象比喻傳達(dá)思想，通過思想表達(dá)感情的新路?！峨x別辭：莫悲傷》是1611年作者隨羅伯特·特魯里爵士出使巴黎時(shí)，在臨行前贈給妻子的詩。在這首詩中，Donne把夫妻關(guān)系喻為圓規(guī)兩只腳的關(guān)系。妻子是定腳，坐鎮(zhèn)中心，當(dāng)丈夫離別（即一只腳移動）時(shí)，妻子（定腳）也隨之轉(zhuǎn)動，喻夫妻雖然分離，卻彼此相連，互相支撐。只有妻子（定腳）堅(jiān)定地坐鎮(zhèn)中心，才“能使我的圓圈圓得完美”，暗示愛人的忠貞不渝才能使他一生美滿。該詩贊頌了戀人之間更深層次的精神之愛，不因分離而受到破壞。
