In 2009, the University of Cambridge reaches a special milestone - 800 years of people, ideas and achievements that continue to transform and benefit the world. Myriadachievements and world-changing ideas were born within the walls of Cambridge, from the establishment of the fundamentals of physics to the discovery of the structure of DNA; from the transformative thinking of great Cambridge philosophers，poets and artists; to the groundbreaking work of its many Nobel Prize winners.

2009年，劍橋迎來(lái)了一個(gè)特殊的里程碑——800年的人文思想和成就仍然在改變和造福這個(gè)世界。從物理學(xué)的奠基到DNA結(jié)構(gòu)的發(fā)現(xiàn);從劍橋哲人，詩(shī)人和藝術(shù)家改變世界的思想，到諸多諾貝爾獎(jiǎng)獲得者的突出貢獻(xiàn);人類歷史上大量的成就和改變世界的理念都出自劍橋大學(xué)。

As claimed by the university itself, its mission is to contribute to society through the pursuit of education, learning, and research at the highest international levels of excellence. The core values of it are: freedom of thought and expression and freedom from discrimination. Questioning spirit, close inter-relationship between teaching, scholarship and research are often encouraged in Cambridge.

It is one of the world’s leading research universities. Cambridge affiliates have won more than 80 Nobel Prizes, more than any other institution in the world. Some of the most famous scientific minds in history have studied, researched or taught here. This is the home of Newton and Darwin, Crick and Watson, Babbage and Hawking, However, it is also the place where the first fully 3D computer game was written, where the precursor to the modemwebcam was invented, and where some of today’s best-known entertainers began their careers.

劍橋是世界上一流的研究型大學(xué)之一，諾貝爾獎(jiǎng)獲得者多達(dá)80余人，比世界上其他任何機(jī)構(gòu)都要多。歷史上很多著名的科學(xué)家都曾經(jīng)在劍橋?qū)W習(xí)、做研究或授課。牛頓、達(dá)爾文、克里克、沃森、 巴貝其還有霍金都來(lái)自劍橋;世界上第一個(gè)真正意義上的3D游戲，第一代調(diào)制解調(diào)器網(wǎng)絡(luò)攝像頭都出自劍橋;同時(shí)，劍橋也是許多著名演藝界人士初展拳腳的地方。

Cambridge is a collegiate university, meaning that it is made up of self-governing and independent colleges, each with its own property and income. Most colleges bring together academics and students from a broad range of disciplines, and within each faculty, school or department within the university, academics from many different colleges will be found. The University of Cambridge currently has 31 colleges, of which three, Murray Edwards, Newnham and Lucy Cavendish, admit only women. The other colleges are now mixed, though most were originally all-male.

劍橋大學(xué)是一所學(xué)院制的大學(xué)，由許多高度自治的獨(dú)立學(xué)院組成，每所學(xué)院財(cái)務(wù)獨(dú)立、自主經(jīng)營(yíng)、自負(fù)盈虧、多數(shù)學(xué)院里都有不同學(xué)科的學(xué)生，在大學(xué)里的每個(gè)科、院和系幾乎都可以找到來(lái)自不同學(xué)院的學(xué)生。劍橋大學(xué)共有31所學(xué)院，其中默里愛德華茲學(xué)院，紐納姆學(xué)院和露西·卡文迪什學(xué)院都只招收女生，盡管其他學(xué)院原來(lái)都只招收男生，現(xiàn)在都變成了男女統(tǒng)招。

During the eight centuries, colleges have been found one after another with the constructions ofdistinctive buildings; numerous scientists, writers, artists and politicians spent wonderful days either studying or teaching in Cambridge. Though some buildings decayed in the 800 years, the spirit and charm of Cambridge is still thriving. May Cambridge enjoy a more brilliant future!

800年來(lái)，各個(gè)學(xué)院相繼設(shè)立，一座座頗具特色的古樓拔地而起，數(shù)不清的科學(xué)家、作家、藝術(shù)家和政治家在這里度過了他們?nèi)松凶钬S富多彩的時(shí)光。經(jīng)歷了800年的風(fēng)風(fēng)雨雨，盡管那些古老的建筑都已失去了往日的風(fēng)采，但是劍橋的恢弘氣勢(shì)和魅力依然催人向上。期待劍橋的明天會(huì)更美好。
