喂，喂，朋友們！亞哈叫道。"抬頭看看上邊；好好地記住，這股白焰就是照引著到白鯨那里去的路！把主桅上那些鏈環(huán)遞給我；我要來(lái)摸一摸這脈搏，讓我的脈搏貼著那脈搏一起跳動(dòng)；血貼著火！就這樣。"
Then turning — the last link held fast in his left hand, he put his foot upon the Parsee; and with fixed upward eye, and high-flung right arm, he stood erect before the lofty tri-pointed trinity of flames.
于是，他一轉(zhuǎn)身——左手緊抓著最末一個(gè)鏈環(huán)，腳踏在那個(gè)祆教徒身上；眼睛呆瞪瞪的往上望，右手甩得高高的，筆挺站在那高高聳起的三股火焰前面。

你這真火的真神?。∥以?jīng)在這海域象波斯人一樣崇拜過(guò)你，后來(lái)在受圣禮時(shí)，讓你給燒得這副樣子，至今身上還有疤痕，我這會(huì)兒了解你，了解你這真神了，我這會(huì)兒才知道對(duì)你的真正的崇拜就是蔑視。不論是愛戴，還是崇敬，你都無(wú)動(dòng)于衷，甚至因?yàn)橄訍?，你就要?dú)ⅲ磺卸家荒銡⒈M殺絕?，F(xiàn)在沒有一個(gè)無(wú)所畏懼的傻瓜敢來(lái)冒犯你了。我承認(rèn)你具有說(shuō)不出的。摸不準(zhǔn)的權(quán)力；可是，我這地震似的生命，至死都要抗拒那無(wú)條件而無(wú)所不至的控制著我的這種權(quán)力。在無(wú)人格的人中，也還有個(gè)性。盡管充其量不過(guò)有一點(diǎn)點(diǎn)，然而我從哪里來(lái)，就要到那里去；只要我還生活在人間，我身上就有威嚴(yán)的個(gè)性，而且感到有一種高貴的權(quán)利。
