Seven hundred and seventy-seventh, again saidBildad, without lifting his eyes; and then went onmumbling--for where your treasure is, there will yourheart be also.

七百七十七分之一,比勒達(dá)眼也不抬地說過后,又繼續(xù)喃喃下去。因?yàn)槟愕呢?cái)寶在哪里,你的心也在那里。

I am going to put him down for the three hundredth,said Peleg, do ye hear that, Bildad! The threehundredth lay, I say.

我要把他的名字寫上,注明三百分之一,法勒說,你聽到吧,比勒達(dá)!三百分之一的拆賬,我說。

Bildad laid down his book, and turning solemnly towards him said, Captain Peleg, thou hast agenerous heart; but thou must consider the duty thou owest to the other owners of this ship--widows and orphans, many of them-- and that if we too abundantly reward the labors of thisyoung man, we may be taking the bread from those widows and those orphans. The sevenhundred and seventy-seventh lay, Captain Peleg.

比勒達(dá)放下了書,一本正經(jīng)地轉(zhuǎn)向他說,法勒船長,你心地豁達(dá)慷慨;可是,你也得想一想你對(duì)這只船的其他股東所負(fù)的責(zé)任。其中有許多是孤兒寡婦呀,因此,我們要是給這個(gè)小伙子的工資給得太多了,我們就會(huì)搶掉這些孤兒寡婦的面包。七百七十七分之一的拆賬,法勒船長。

Thou Bildad! roared Peleg, starting up and clattering about the cabin. Blast ye, Captain Bildad,if I had followed thy advice in these matters, I would afore now had a conscience to lug aboutthat would be heavy enough to founder the largest ship that ever sailed round Cape Horn.

Captain Peleg, said Bildad steadily, thy conscience may be drawing ten inches of water, or tenfathoms, I can't tell; but as thou art still an impenitent man, Captain Peleg, I greatly fear lestthy conscience be but a leaky one; and will in the end sink thee foundering down to the fierypit, Captain Peleg.
