The captain tries again.

機長再次嘗試。

Did you tell him?

卡維德：“你跟他講了嗎？”

Klotz: Yes, sir. I already advise him.

克魯茲：“是的，先生，我已經(jīng)向他提出了建議。”

Klotz starts talking to ATC, going over routine details.

克魯茲開始對ATC說話——重復(fù)慣用的報告。

One-Five-Zero maintaining two thousand Avianca Zero-Five-Two heavy.

處在2 000米高空的阿維安卡52號已經(jīng)很難再堅持等待候降。

The captain is clearly at the edge of panic.

機長已經(jīng)處于崩潰的邊緣。

Caviedes: Advise him we don't have fuel.

卡維德說：“告訴他我們沒有燃料了。”

Klots gets back on the radio with ATC.

克魯茲重新再次與ATC通話。

Climb and maintain three thousand and, ah, we're running out of fuel, sir.

“爬升并保持在3 000米，并且，嗯，我們沒有燃料了，先生。”

There is again. No mention of the magic word "emergency," which is what air traffic controllers are trained to listen for.

再一次，他沒有提到“危急”，這是可以引起空管員足夠重視的神奇詞匯。

Just "running out of fuel" at the end of a sentence, preceded by the mitigating "ah."

只在一段話的最后部分提起“沒燃料了，先生”，而且在此之前還說了個“嗯”好像是在斟酌用詞是否恰當。

Caviedes: Did you already advise that we don't have fuel?

Caviedes: Bueno.

If it were not the prelude to a tragedy, their back-and-forth would resemble an Abbott and Costello comedy routine.

如果這不是一場災(zāi)難的前奏，他們這一來一去的對話一定會被認為是高腳七（Abbott）和矮冬瓜（Cosfello）式的喜劇對白。

A little over a minute passes.

時間過去了一分多鐘。

ATC: And Avianca zero-five-two heavy, ah, I'm gonna bring you about fifteen miles northeast and then turn you back onto the approach.

Is that okay with you and your fuel?

KLOTZ: I guess so. Thank you very much.

They are about to crash!

One of the flight attendants enters the cockpit to find out how serious the situation is.

其中一名空乘人員進入駕駛艙內(nèi)想看看情況的嚴重程度。

The flight engineer points to the empty fuel gauge, and makes a throat-cutting gesture with his finger.

一名飛行員指著燃油顯示為零的儀表盤，用手指做了個割喉的動作，

But he says nothing.

但他沒有講話。

Nor does anyone else for the next five minutes.

在接下來的5分鐘，駕駛艙內(nèi)也沒有任何一個人講話。

There's radio chatter and routine business, and then the flight engineer cries out,"Flameout on engine number four!"

只有電臺的沙沙聲和日常的操作聲，然后一名飛行工程師叫了起來“四號引擎著火了！”

Caviedes says, "Show me the runway," but the run-way is sixteen miles away.

卡維德說“告訴我跑道”。但是跑道在十六英里以外的地方。

Thirty-six seconds of silence pass.

The plane's air traf-fic controller calls out one last time.

空管員在最后的時刻呼叫

You have, ah, you have enough fuel to make it to the airport?
