"Well," said the little boy, "I was very thirsty,

and so I wanted to go to a candy store and getsomething to drink."

"Just tell what you saw, please, Alfred," said thejudge.

"Never mind how thirsty you were."

“不必提你剛才有多渴。”

"I was coming along the street," continued Alfred, "because I was very thirsty.

So I was coming along the street on my way to the candy store to get something to drink, andthere,

up in the sky, all of a sudden there was a big white bird right over me in the sky and he wassliding down out of the sky like this."

Alfred held out his arms and imitated a bird.

"And so when I saw the big bird I stopped thinking about how thirsty I was and pretty soonthis enormous bird,

he was enormous, was on the sidewalk and he was dead and there was blood all overeverything and that's what I saw."

"Did you hear a gun?"

"No, just blood," said Alfred.

"Thank you!" said the judge. "That will be all."

Just then a siren started wailing--woooaw, woooaw, woooaw.

這時候傳來了一陣凄厲的警笛聲——嗚哇嗚，嗚哇嗚，嗚哇嗚。

An ambulance came screaming down the street.

一輛救護車尖叫著沿街開了過來。

It stopped in front of the crowd. Two men jumped out.

車停在人群面前。兩個男人從里面跑了出來。

They carried a stretcher and set it down next to where the swan lay.

他們抬著一個擔架，把它放在天鵝躺倒的地方。

The old cob lifted his head and looked around.

老雄天鵝抬起他的頭四處打量著。

"I have been at death's door," he thought, "and now I think I am returning to life.

“我本已到了死亡的門口了，”他想，“現(xiàn)在我覺得我又回到生活里來了。

I am reviving. I shall live! I shall return on strong wings to the great sky.

我正在復活。我會活下去了!我會展開強健的翅膀回到廣袤的天空中去了。

I shall glide gracefully again on the ponds of the worl

我可以再次優(yōu)雅地滑翔在池塘世界里，

and hear the frogs and take pleasure in the sounds of night and the coming of day."

聽青蛙鳴唱，欣賞黑夜之聲，迎接白天的到來了。”

As he was thinking these pleasant thoughts, he felt himself being lifted.

他正在想著這些快樂的事情，忽然感到自己被什么帶了起來。

The ambulance attendants put his slate around his neck,

救護車上下來的護理員把他的石板掛到他的脖子上，

picked him up, laid him gently on the stretcher, and carried him into the ambulance,

which had a red light whirling round and around on top of it.

One of the men placed an oxygen mask over the old cob's head and gave him some oxygen.

And away they drove, making a great deal of noise, to the hospital.

最后他們一路呼嘯著朝醫(yī)院駛去。

There, he was put to bed and given a shot of penicillin.

A young doctor came in and examined the wound where the shotgun pellet had hit him.

一個年輕的醫(yī)生給他檢查了鳥槍彈丸打到他身上的傷口。

The doctor said the wound was superficial.

The old cob didn't know what "superficial" meant, but it sounded serious.

老雄天鵝不知道“表面上的”一詞是什么意思，可他聽罷卻感到很嚴重。

Nurses gathered around.

護士們圍過來了。

One of them took the swan's blood pressure and wrote something on a chart.

其中的一個給這只天鵝量了血壓并在一張表上寫了些什么。

The old cob was beginning to feel very well again.

老雄天鵝又開始感覺不錯了。

It felt good to be in bed, being cared for by nurses--one of whom was quite pretty.

他覺得躺在病床上讓護士們照顧的感覺很舒服--其中的一個還相當漂亮呢。

The doctor washed the wound and put a Band-Aid on it.

醫(yī)生洗凈了他的傷口，又在上面貼了一條“邦迪”。
