“叫救護(hù)車!”那個(gè)女士尖叫。
"I'll have to take that money to the station house,"said the policeman.
“我要把這些錢帶到警察局去，”那個(gè)警察說，
"This is a complicated case. Anything that involvesmoney is complex.
“這是一個(gè)復(fù)雜的案件。任何和錢有關(guān)的事情都是復(fù)雜的。
I'll take the money and keep it safe until the matteris decided."
在事情解決前我得把這筆錢拿走并保管好。”
"No, you won't!" said the game warden. "The money is mine."
“不，你不能這么干!”狩獵法執(zhí)行官說，“這錢是我的。”
"Why?" asked the policeman.
“為什么?”警察問。
"Because," replied the warden.
“因?yàn)椋?rdquo;執(zhí)法官回答。
"Because what?" asked the policeman.
“因?yàn)槭裁?”這個(gè)警察問。
"Because the law says the bird is in my custody. The money was on the bird.
“因?yàn)榉缮险f鳥類在我的監(jiān)管范圍內(nèi)。而錢是這只鳥身上的。
Therefore, the money goes to me until this is settled."
所以，在事情妥善解決前這筆錢該歸我。”
"Oh, no, you don't!" said the storekeeper, angrily.
“噢，不，你不能拿它!”那個(gè)店主生氣地說，
"The money is mine. It says so right here on this slate.
“這錢該歸我。石板上說得很清楚嘛。
The four thousand four hundred and twenty dollars and seventy-eight cents is mine.
這四千四百二十美元七十八美分都是我的。
Nobody's going to take it away from me."
沒人能把它從我這里拿走!”
"Yes, they are!" said the policeman. "I am."
“對(duì)，說得對(duì)!”那個(gè)警察說，“只有我除外。”
"No, I am," said the game warden.
“不，只有我才除外。”那個(gè)狩獵法執(zhí)行官說。
"Is there a lawyer in the crowd?" asked the storekeeper.
“這幫人里有沒有律師?”那個(gè)店主問，
"We'll settle this matter right here and now."
“我們此時(shí)此地就該解決這件事。”
A tall man stepped forward. "I'm Judge Ricketts," he said.
一個(gè)高個(gè)子男人走上前來。“我是里基特法官，”他說，
"I'll decide this case. Now then, who saw the bird arrive?"
“我來斷這個(gè)案子。首先，是誰看到這只鳥飛來的?”
"I did," said the salesman.
“我，”那個(gè)店員說。
"Call an ambulance!" screamed the lady.
“叫救護(hù)車!”那個(gè)女士尖叫。
"I saw the bird, too," said a small boy named Alfred Gore.
“我也看到這只鳥兒了。”一個(gè)叫艾爾弗雷德·戈?duì)柕男∧泻⒄f。
"O.k.," said the judge. "Describe what happened, exactly as you saw it."
“OK，”這個(gè)法官說，“描述一下剛才發(fā)生的事，就照你們見到的說。”
The salesman spoke first. "Well," he said,
那個(gè)店員先說起來。“好吧，”他說，
"I was looking out the window and saw a swan approaching. So I hollered.
“我正好從櫥窗里往外看，看到有一只天鵝正向這里飛來。于是我就喊人了。
The boss got his gun and fired, and the bird fell to the sidewalk. There was a drop or two ofblood."
老板拿起他的槍就開了火，然后這只鳥就掉到人行道上了。還流了一兩滴血。”
"Did you notice anything special about the bird?" asked Judge Ricketts.
“你注意到這只鳥有什么特別之處嗎?”里基特法官問。
"He carried money," replied the salesman.
“他帶著錢，”這個(gè)店員回答，
"You don't often see any money on a bird, so I noticed it."
“你一般不會(huì)在鳥身上看到什么錢的，所以我發(fā)覺這很特別。”
"All right," said the judge.
“很好，”這個(gè)法官說，
"Now we'll let Alfred Gore tell it as he saw it. Describe what you saw, Alfred!"
“現(xiàn)在我們讓艾爾弗雷德·戈?duì)柊阉姷降臄⑹鲆槐?。說說你剛才看到的，艾爾弗雷德!”
