There was a sculptor who specialized in artwork of the sea.

有一位雕刻家專攻海洋藝術(shù)品的雕刻。

He would make seasonal visits to the sea to find sculptural inspiration for his sculpture.

他根據(jù)季節(jié)的變化定期去海邊，為雕刻作品尋找雕刻靈感。

On one visit to the sea, he chose a secluded seaport, and headed directly for the seashore.

一次去海邊的時(shí)候，他選擇了一個(gè)孤立的港口，然后直奔海濱。

After renting some scuba gear, he scrupulously scrutinized it.

他租了一個(gè)水中呼吸器，并小心翼翼地詳細(xì)檢查了一番。

He found that one of the screws was loose, so he tightened it with a screwdriver.

他發(fā)現(xiàn)其中一個(gè)螺釘松了，于是用螺絲刀把螺釘擰緊。

He found that a seam in his rubber ping suit was torn, so he seared it closed with a hot iron.

接著他又發(fā)現(xiàn)他的橡膠潛水衣的接縫撕開(kāi)了，于是他又用熨斗灼燒接口，使接口復(fù)合。

He then rented a boat and hired a crew and sailed out to deep waters,

隨即他租了一條小船，雇請(qǐng)了一些船工出海了。

where he asked the seamen to stop and let him pe. He then dove in.

到了深海以后，他請(qǐng)求海員們停船，自己潛入了水中。

After clearing his way through the seaweed on the surface, he swam down a few meters to the seabed,

穿過(guò)海水表面的海藻以后，他下潛好幾米游到了接近海底的地方。

where he spied a seamount covered with a great number of sea cucumbers.

在那兒，他看到了一個(gè)海底山，山上全是海參。

These little animals were secreting a certain secretion that the sculptor found very pleasing to the eye.

這些小東西分泌出一些液體，非常悅目。

So, using his underwater camera, he took pictures of them with scrupulous care.

他極端小心地用水下照相機(jī)拍了幾張照片。

Knowing that sea cucumber was good eating, especially with a little seasoning, he considered taking up a few.

考慮到海參很好吃，尤其是加上點(diǎn)調(diào)味品以后味道更好，所以他打算帶一些上去。

However, being a man of scruples and knowing that it was illegal to fish without a license,

然而，他又是一個(gè)躊躇不決的人，他深知沒(méi)有許可證釣魚(yú)是違法的，

he thought it best not to take anything.

所以認(rèn)為最好還是不要帶任何東西。

However, he had a secondary thought.

可是，他還有另外的想法。

He knew that he was in seclusion and that no one would see him take a few tiny sea cucumbers,

他知道自己所處的地方非常隱秘，要是帶一些小海參應(yīng)該沒(méi)有人注意到，

so be shoved a few in his sack and headed for the surface.

所以最終他還是捉了一些放到口袋里，然后才浮出水面。

When he got home, he put the sea cucumber in his fish tank and began to sculpt.

回到家以后，他把海參放到魚(yú)缸里，開(kāi)始了他的雕刻創(chuàng)作。
