On a trip to South Asia,

有一次去南亞

I met a desperately poor Indian woman who had twochildren

我碰到了一位赤貧的印度女性 她有兩個(gè)孩子

and she begged me to take them home with me.

她請求我把這兩個(gè)孩子帶回去領(lǐng)養(yǎng)

And when I begged her for her forgiveness she said,

在我請她原諒我的無能為力時(shí) 她說

well, then please, just take one of them.

那請你領(lǐng)養(yǎng)其中一個(gè)孩子行嗎

On another trip to south Los Angeles,

還有一次我去南洛杉磯

I met with a group of the students from a tough neighborhood.

見了一群來自艱苦社區(qū)的學(xué)生

A young girl said to me,

一個(gè)小女孩跟我說

do you ever feel like we are the kids

你有沒有覺得我們這些孩子

whose parents shirked their responsibilities

都被父母放置不理

and we are just the leftovers?

我們只不過是多余的東西

These women broke my heart.

這些女性讓我感到心碎

And they still do.

現(xiàn)在仍然如此

And the empathy intensifies if I admit to myself, that could be me.

如果想想"這也可能是我" 同情心便會(huì)越發(fā)強(qiáng)烈

When I talk with the mothers I meet during my travels,

我在其它地方碰到過很多母親

there's no difference between what we want for our children.

我們想為子女提供的東西其實(shí)并沒有太大差別

The only difference is our ability to provide it to our children.

唯一差別在于我們?yōu)樽优峁┻@些東西的能力

So what accounts for that difference?
