[00:00.54]The knowledge that you have emerged wiser and stronger from setbacks

[00:04.27]means that you are, ever after, secure in your ability to survive.

[00:09.56]You will never truly know yourself, or the strength of your relationships, until both have been tested by adversity.

[00:17.36]Such knowledge is a true gift, for all that it is painfully won,

[00:23.22]and it has been worth more to me than any qualification I ever earned.

[00:28.17]So given a Time Turner, I would tell my 21-year-old self that personal happiness,

[00:33.21]lies in knowing that life is not a check-list of acquisition or achievement.

[00:38.56]Your qualifications, your CV, are not your life,

[00:43.08]though you will meet many people of my age and older who confuse the two.

[00:47.57]Life is difficult, and complicated, and beyond anyone’s total control,

[00:53.35]and the humility to know that will enable you to survive its vicissitudes.

[01:00.42]You might think I chose my second theme, the importance of imagination,

[01:04.07]because of the part it played in rebuilding my life, but that is not wholly so.

[01:09.34]Though I personally will defend the value of bedtime stories to my last gasp,

[01:15.17]I have learned to value imagination in a much broader sense.

[01:19.36]Imagination is not only the uniquely human capacity to envision that which is not,

[01:26.08]and therefore the fount of all invention and innovation.

[01:31.00]In its arguably most transformative and revelatory capacity,

[01:35.27]it is the power that enables us to empathise with humans whose experiences we have never shared.
