get the ball rolling字面意思是“讓球滾動”，這個詞組源自足球慣例：由一位球員開球，把球傳給隊友，借此展開一場比賽。所以這個詞組后來就引申為：“開始某談話或活動”。因此，當美國人說"Let's get the ball rolling."時，他/她要表達的意思就是:"Let's begin."、"Let's get started."。
