談談north, south, east and west（北、南、東、西）的用法

英語中表示方位的東、西、南、北四個名詞是east, west, south和north。在使用時要注意以下幾點：

1. 在通常情況下，其前要加定冠詞。如：

The sun rises in the east and sets in the west. 太陽從東方升起，至西方落下。

Better farmlands lie in the north of the state. 肥沃的農(nóng)田分布在該國北部。

The north is less expensive to live in than the south. 北方的生活費用比南方低。

Go toward the south to get to Mexico from Texas. 向南走從德克薩斯州進入墨西哥。

但是，當強調(diào)方位對比時，可以不用冠詞。如：

South is opposite north on a compass. 羅盤上南與北相對。

The direction opposite to north is south. 北的反方向是南。

East or west, home is best. 東好西好不如自己的家好。

有時表示純方位，也可不用冠詞。如：

I’m lost—which way is east? 我迷路了，哪邊是東？

另外，與from…to…連接的兩個表示方位的名詞，其前通常也不用冠詞。如：

The river flows from north to south. 這條河從北向南流。

2. 表示“在……的東（南、西、北）”，通常應根據(jù)具體情況來選用介詞。

(1) 以下各例的方位名詞前用介詞in，表示一地在另一地的范圍之內(nèi)。如：

China is in the east of Asia. 中國位于亞洲的東部。

The church is located in the east of the city. 教堂在本市的東部。

The capital is in the extreme south of the country. 首都位于這個國家的最南端。

(2) 以下各例的方位名詞用介詞on，表示一地在另一地之外，且彼此接壤或毗鄰。如：

China faces the Pacific on the east. 中國東臨太平洋。

Mexico is on the south of the USA. 墨西哥在美國南面。

(3) 以下各例的方位名詞前用介詞to，表示一地在另一地的范圍之外，兩者可能彼此接壤也可能有一定距離。如：

She lives to the west of Glasgow. 她住在格拉斯哥以西的地方。

There are mountains to the north of here. 這兒的北面有山。

It’s a few kilometers to the east of London. 那是倫敦以東幾公里的地方。

表示彼此接壤時，用介詞on或to均可以。如：

Korea lies on the east of China. 朝鮮位于中國的東邊。
