名詞standard的意義與用法

 standard 的基本義為“標(biāo)準(zhǔn)”“水平”，具體用法如下：

一、指判斷（judge）的標(biāo)準(zhǔn)

即指參照此標(biāo)準(zhǔn)來(lái)判斷質(zhì)量的好壞、技能的強(qiáng)弱、能力的高低、成就的大小等。此時(shí)可數(shù)或不可數(shù)均可。如：

The standard of work has gone down. 工作標(biāo)準(zhǔn)降低了。

Air quality standards vary from state to state. 空氣質(zhì)量標(biāo)準(zhǔn)州與州不同。

All our toys conform with safety standards. 我們所有的玩具都符合安全標(biāo)準(zhǔn)。

The agency establishes and enforces standards of food production. 該機(jī)構(gòu)制定并執(zhí)行食品生產(chǎn)標(biāo)準(zhǔn)。

All fireworks must conform to British safety standards. 所有焰火的生產(chǎn)都必須遵照英國(guó)安全標(biāo)準(zhǔn)。

A local farmer was cited for breaking environmental standards. 當(dāng)?shù)氐囊晃晦r(nóng)場(chǎng)主因違反了環(huán)境標(biāo)準(zhǔn)而受到法庭傳喚。

He’s got a double standard: it’s all right for him to have affairs but not for her. 他采取雙重標(biāo)準(zhǔn)：自己可以有外遇，女方卻不行。

◆這樣用時(shí)，其后通常接介詞for，表示“……的標(biāo)準(zhǔn)”。如：

The government prescribes standards for the purity of food. 政府規(guī)定食品清潔的標(biāo)準(zhǔn)。

Regulations prescribe certain standards for building materials. 有規(guī)章規(guī)定建筑材料的某些標(biāo)準(zhǔn)。

◆另外，注意習(xí)語(yǔ)up to standard（合格, 達(dá)到標(biāo)準(zhǔn)）。如：

Their work is not up to standard. 他們的工作成績(jī)不夠標(biāo)準(zhǔn)。

Replacement is guaranteed if the products are not up to standard. 產(chǎn)品不和規(guī)格，保證退換。

We need to bring our computer system up to standard. 我們得更新計(jì)算機(jī)系統(tǒng)以達(dá)到標(biāo)準(zhǔn)。

Unless your scuba diving equipment is up to standard, do not use it. 如果你的水肺潛泳設(shè)備不合標(biāo)準(zhǔn)，就不要使用它。

二、指比較（compare）的標(biāo)準(zhǔn)

即與另一事物比較時(shí)被認(rèn)為是好的或正常的等，尤指與平均質(zhì)量、平均水平、平均數(shù)量（或普通質(zhì)量、普通水平、普通數(shù)量）作比較。此時(shí)為可數(shù)，但通常用復(fù)數(shù)形式。如：

The work isn’t up to his usual standard. 他的工作沒(méi)有達(dá)到他通常的水平。

I’d say her work is of a reasonable standard. 我認(rèn)為她的工作水平還過(guò)得去。

Judged by the ordinary standards, he was reliable. 接普通標(biāo)準(zhǔn)看，他是可靠的。

It is simply not the case that educational standards have fallen. 說(shuō)教育水平下降了，這根本不符合事實(shí)。
