42課 Not very musical

As we had had a long walk through one of the markets of old Delhi, we stopped at a square to have a rest. After a time, we noticed a snake charmer with two large baskets at the other side of the square, so we went to have a look at him. As soon as he saw us, he picked up a long pipe which was covered with coins and opened one of the baskets. When he began to play a tune, we had our first glimpse of the snake. Itrose out of the basket and began to follow the movements of the pipe. We were very much surprised when the snake charmer suddenly began to play jazz and modern pop songs. The snake, however, continued to 'dance' slowly. It obviously could not tell the difference between Indian music and jazz!

精講筆記：

4. When he began to play a tune, we had our first glimpse of the snake.

當(dāng)他開始吹奏一支曲子時(shí)，我枘才第一次看到那條蛇。

語(yǔ)言點(diǎn)1 have / get a glimpse of... = take a glance at…瞥見 .

語(yǔ)言點(diǎn)2 play a tune = play music吹奏曲子

5. It rose out of the basket and began to follow the movements of the pipe.

它從籃子里探出身子，隨著樂器的擺動(dòng)而扭動(dòng)。

語(yǔ)言點(diǎn)1 rose是rise的過(guò)去式，既可作不及物動(dòng)詞又可作及物動(dòng)詞。

語(yǔ)言點(diǎn) 2 對(duì)比學(xué)習(xí)：follow, ensue, succeed, result

1) follow為常用詞，指繼之而來(lái)或繼之而去：

Spring follows winter.冬去春來(lái)。

2) ensue為正式用語(yǔ)，指隨之引起或接著發(fā)生：

Clouds appeared and rain ensued. 云來(lái)雨至。

3) succeed強(qiáng)調(diào)時(shí)間、順序上隨之而來(lái)：

She was not willing to succeed her mother as manager of the hotel.

她不愿繼承母親酒店經(jīng)理的工作。

4) result 強(qiáng)調(diào)前者和后者之間是因果關(guān)系：

Superstition results from ignorance.迷信產(chǎn)生于無(wú)知。

6. We were very much surprised when the snake charmer suddenly began to play jazz and modern pop songs.

當(dāng)耍蛇人突然開始演奏爵士樂和現(xiàn)代流行樂曲時(shí)，我們感到非常吃驚。

語(yǔ)言點(diǎn) 動(dòng)詞begin(開始)、cease(停止)、start(開始)、continue(繼續(xù))后面既可以跟不定式，也可以接動(dòng)名詞，在意思上沒有什么區(qū)別：

Even though it was raining, they continued to play / playing football.

盡管下雨了，他們依然在踢足球。

The students ceased to leam / learning French last semester.

上個(gè)學(xué)期，學(xué)生們就停止學(xué)習(xí)法語(yǔ)了。

注意：在使用以上四個(gè)動(dòng)詞時(shí)，如果句子為進(jìn)行時(shí)態(tài)，一般不用動(dòng)名詞形式，以避免重復(fù)。

例;I am continuing learning New Concept English. 沒有語(yǔ)法鐠誤，但顯得累贅，

建議改為：I am continuing to learn New Concept English.

我在繼續(xù)學(xué)習(xí)《新概念英語(yǔ)》。
