39課 Am I all right?

While John Gilbert was in hospital, he asked hisdoctor to tell him whether his operation hadbeensuccessful, but the doctor refused to do so. Thefollowing day, the patient asked for a bedsidetelephone. When hewas alone, he telephoned thehospital exchange and asked for Doctor Millington.When the doctor answered the phone, MrGilbert said he was inquiring about a certainpatient, a Mr John Gilbert. He asked if MrGilbert's operation had been successful and thedoctor told him thatit had been. He then asked when Mr Gilbert would be allowed to gohome and the doctor told him that he would have to stay in hospital for another twoweeks. Then Dr Millington asked the caller if he was a relative of the patient.' No,' the patientanswered,' I am Mr John Gilbert.

精講筆記：

4. When the doctor answered the phone, Mr. Gilbert said he was inquiring about acertain patient, a Mr. John Gilbert.

當(dāng)這位醫(yī)生接過(guò)電話時(shí)，吉爾伯特先生說(shuō)他想詢問(wèn)一個(gè)病人的情況，是一位名叫吉爾伯特的先生。

語(yǔ)言點(diǎn) answer the phone意為“接電話”;

pick up the phone是指“拿起電話”。

5. He asked if Mr. Gilbert’s operation had been successful and the doctor told him thatit had been.

他問(wèn)吉爾伯特先生的手術(shù)是否成功，醫(yī)生告訴他手術(shù)很成功。

語(yǔ)言點(diǎn) 注意：if在此不表示條件,而是引出間接引語(yǔ)，意為“是否”。

6. He then asked when Mr. Gilbert would be allowed to go home and the doctor toldhim that hewould have to stay in hospital for another two weeks.

然后他又問(wèn)吉爾伯特先生什么時(shí)候可以回家，醫(yī)生說(shuō)他在醫(yī)院還必須再住上兩個(gè)星期。

語(yǔ)言點(diǎn)1 when連接的句子是謂語(yǔ)動(dòng)詞asked的賓語(yǔ)從句;and連接并列句，后一個(gè)分句中that連接的句子則是謂語(yǔ)動(dòng)詞told的賓語(yǔ)從句。

語(yǔ)言點(diǎn)2 兩個(gè)賓語(yǔ)從句中的謂語(yǔ)動(dòng)詞：would be allowed為過(guò)去將來(lái)時(shí)的被動(dòng)語(yǔ)態(tài)，would have to stay為過(guò)去將來(lái)時(shí)。
