[00:-1.00]We live our lives as part of many cultures.

[00:-2.00]In groups or communities,

[00:-3.00]we share common experiences that shape the way we understand the world-our nation,

[00:-4.00]our planet, our school and our youth.

[00:-5.00]There are differences among us,that's for sure, but in the end,

[00:-6.00]we are all part of the human culture.

[00:-7.00]In our diversity,we find common ground.

[00:-8.00]One generation passes away, and another generation comes:

[00:-9.00]but the earth adides forever.-Biblical Proverb

[00:12.00]What does cultural diversity mean to you?

[00:13.00]Let's read theses diverse opinions from people from around the world.

[00:14.00]Jenny:I grew to with cultural diversity.

[00:15.00]Cananda is famous for being a multicultural society.

[00:16.00]When I go to school,

[00:17.00]I see many different kinds of people

[00:18.00]with different sking colour and hair colour,

[00:19.00]different language,religion,culture,food,and traditions.

[00:20.00]It makes me feel good that we can all study together and be friends.

[00:21.00]It is more interesting to have friends

[00:22.00]with many different ways of understanding the world.

[00:23.00]I learn more about the world and I also learn a lot about myself,

[00:24.00]and my own culture.

[00:25.00]LiMing:China has its own unique kind of cultural diversity.

[00:26.00]In our country, there are more than fifty different nationalities,

[00:27.00]so there is variety and diversity nationalities,

[00:28.00]However,all the nationalities share many common traditions and attitrdes towards life.

[00:29.00]We are all more similar than we are different.

[00:30.00]Under all the differences,

[00:31.00]there is an understanding that harmony and balance is very important in life.

[00:32.00]In other countries around the world, this is not the case.

[00:33.00]There are ofthen dramatic differences among cultures

[00:34.00]because the cultures come from every corner of the earth.

[00:35.00]I think this is exciting.

[00:36.00]I would like to travel abroad and learn more about other cultures

[00:37.00]because I want to know about what makes us the same as people from other cultures,

[00:38.00]and what makes us unique.

[00:39.00]I enjoy working in this high school.

[00:40.00]We have at least ten international students who come to study here every year,

[00:41.00]and of course we have students of many different nationalities who were born,

[00:42.00]or have immigrated, here. It creates an atmosphere of diversity.

[00:43.00]I have really appreciated learning about other cultures and their traditions.

[00:44.00]Even our teachers are multicultural.

[00:45.00]One of our math teachers is from India

[00:46.00]and wears his traditional dress and turban when he teaches in the classroom.

[00:47.00]When his daughter got married he invited us to the wedding ceremony.

[00:48.00]It was a fantastic experience!

[00:49.00]I think it is good when we can learn about other customs and attitudes.

[00:50.00]That way we understand and appreciate other cultures better.

[00:51.00]I was very surprised when I arrived in Canada to studay.

[00:52.00]On campus,I saw so many Chinese students.

[00:53.00]It seemed that there were as many Asians as there were Canadians.

[00:54.00]I also noticed many other races and nationalities

[00:55.00]all studying at this one university.

[00:56.00]It was amazing.I felt the world was very small!

[00:57.00]This situation caused a little bit of a problem for me,though.

[00:58.00]Even though I was new to this university, and was nervous about my English,

[00:59.00]many people assumed I was Chinese Canadian.

[-1:00.00]I did not seem unusual to them.

[-1:-1.00]Once my classmates found out that I was a foreign student,

[-1:-2.00]they were very friendly and helpful.

[-1:-3.00]They treated me like I was just another student.

[-1:-4.00]Let's singing song

[-1:-5.00]SECTION 2 MEANING THROUGH PRACTICE

[-1:-6.00]C.Build your listening skills

[-1:-7.00]Part 1:In class today,

[-1:-8.00]LiMing found that people use many different words to describe culture.

[-1:-9.00]Listen to his conversation with Jenny,

[-1:10.00]and match each person with the words they use to describe"culture."

[-1:11.00]Part 2:Listen to the following conversation

[-1:12.00]about cultural differences between the English and Americans,

[-1:13.00]and answer the questions below.

[-1:14.00]SECTION 4 READING FOR CULTURAL AWARENESS

[-1:15.00]What do you know about culture and cultural differences?

[-1:16.00]Culture is a complex concept, with hundreds of definitions.

[-1:17.00]Simply put,culture refers to a group

[-1:18.00]or community with which we share common experiences[-1:19.00]that shape the way we understand the world.

[-1:20.00]It includes groups into which we are born,

[-1:21.00]such as gender,race,or national origin.

[-1:22.00]It also includes groups we join.

[-1:23.00]For example,we can acquire a new culture by moving to a new region,

[-1:24.00]by a change in our economic status,or by becoming disabled.

[-1:25.00]When we think of culture this broadly,

[-1:26.00]we realize we all belong to many cultures at once.

[-1:27.00]Culture is an abstract and sometimes all-inclusive term.

[-1:28.00]It is abstract in that it is not something you can"grasp,"

[-1:29.00]although is can be sensed and perceived everwhere.

[-1:30.00]It is all-inclusive in that you can talk about

[-1:31.00]different knids of cultures-you can have classroom culture,

[-1:32.00]school culture,office culture,etc.

[-1:33.00]On the other hand, culture is concrete and specific.

[-1:34.00]For instance, there are indeed differences between Chinese and Western cultures.

[-1:35.00]These differences can be as small as the way the way of greeting

[-1:36.00]and addressing one another.

[-1:37.00]They can be as big as the way of thinking.

[-1:38.00]Here let's be very specific

[-1:39.00]by reading and discussing the fololwing questions about school culture,

[-1:40.00]body language and social customs.

[-1:41.00]Please discuss,debate and argue,if you like,

[-1:42.00]about answers to the questions based on your own knowledge and experience.

[-1:43.00]Body language:Can you explain what the following Noth American,

[-1:44.00]or Western,gestures mean?

[-1:45.00]* Palm facing out with the index

[-1:46.00]and middle fingers displayed in the shape of a"V."

[-1:47.00]* Thumb and forefinger forming a circle

[-1:48.00]with the other three fingers splayed upward.

[-1:49.00]* Extending the forefinger and making a circular motion near the temple or ear.

[-1:50.00]* Thumb and forefinger making a circle.

[-1:51.00]* Thumbs up.

[-1:52.00]* Holding the index and middle fingers upright.

[-1:53.00]* Nodding the head up and down.

[-1:54.00]* Shaking the head side to side.

[-1:55.00]* Scratching the head.

[-1:56.00]* Direct eye contact during greeting and conversation.

[-1:57.00]* Cupping the ear.

[-1:58.00]* Holding the nose with thumb and forefinger.

[-1:59.00]What's Wrong?

[-2:00.00]Establishing an international market is a gool of many corporations.

[-2:-1.00]However,even those big transnational corporations

[-2:-2.00]run into trouble because of language and cultural differences.

[-2:-3.00]Here are some examples.

[-2:-4.00]When General Motors introduced the Chevy Nova in South America,

[-2:-5.00]it was apparently unaware that"no va"means"it won't go."

[-2:-6.00]Afer the company figured out why it wasn't selling any cars,

[-2:-7.00]it renamed the car in its Spanish markets to the Caribe.

[-2:-8.00]An American T-shirt maker in Miami

[-2:-9.00]printed shirts for the Spanish market which promoted the Pope's visit.

[-2:10.00]Instead of the desired"I Saw the Pope"in Spanish,

[-2:11.00]the shirts said"I Saw that Potato."

[-2:12.00]When Parker Pen marketed a ballpoint pen in Mexico,

[-2:13.00]its ads were supposed to say"It won't leak in your pocket and embarrass you."

[-2:14.00]However,the company mistakenly thought the Spanish word"embarazar"meant embarrass.

[-2:15.00]Instead the ads said that"It won't leak in your pocket and make you pregnant." [-2:16.00]When Coca-Cola was first introduced in China,

[-2:17.00]the name in Chinese equivalents presented some weird results.

[-2:18.00]One of these homemade names for"Coca-Cola"sounded like"bite the wax tadpole".

[-2:19.00]Unfortunately,the Coke company did not discover this

[-2:20.00]until after thousands of signs had been printed.

[-2:21.00]Coke then researched 40000 Chinese characters

[-2:22.00]and found a close phonetic equivalent,

[-2:23.00]"ke-kou-ke-le,"which can be loosely translated as"happing in the mouth."

[-2:24.00]Also in Chinese, the Kentucky Fried Chicken slogan

[-2:25.00]"fingerlickin'good"came out as "eat your fingers off."

[-2:26.00]The American slogan for Salem cigarettes,

[-2:27.00]"Salem-Feeling Free,"got trandslated in the Japanese market into

[-2:28.00]"When smoking Salem,

[-2:29.00]you feel so refreshed that your mind seems to be free and empty."

[-2:30.00]In Italy,a campaign for Schweppes Tonic Water

[-2:31.00]translated the name into Schweppes Toilet Water.
