[00:-2.00]and you feel the pulse of the engine as you speed down the runway!
[00:-3.00]Exotic places;lions and tigers and tropical rain forests.
[00:-4.00]If you've planned your voyage well, you can sit back,
[00:-5.00]watch the view out your window and dream of the stories you will have
[00:-6.00]to entertain friends and family when you return.
[00:-7.00]A journey of a thousand miles always begins with one step.

[00:-9.00]SECTION 1 NEW WORDS AND IDEAS
[00:10.00]Planning a Trip to Australia
[00:11.00]Li Ming asking Jenny for advice through e-mail
[00:12.00]LiMing:I'm getting ready for my trip to Australia and I'm very excited.
[00:13.00]I need some advice from you,Jenny.
[00:14.00]I know you have travelled to many foreign countries,
[00:15.00]so you probably know some important things
[00:16.00]that I should keep in mind when planning my trip.
[00:17.00]Jenny:I'm so excited for you.You are going to have a great experience.
[00:18.00]This is your first time travelling to Australia, isn't it?
[00:19.00]LiMing:Yes,that's right.
[00:20.00]There are so many things to think about when planning for such a big trip.
[00:21.00]Can you give me a hand with this?
[00:22.00]What do I need to remember when I plan my trip?
[00:23.00]Jenny:Planning the trip can be half the fun!
[00:24.00]Start by making a list of things to do.
[00:25.00]As each one is accomplished, you can cross it off the list.
[00:26.00]That way you can see how close you are to being ready.
[00:27.00]First of all,do you have your passport?
[00:28.00]LiMing:Oh,yes,I applied for one right away
[00:29.00]and it should be arriving in two weeks.
[00:30.00]Jenny:Do you seed a visa to enter Australia?
[00:31.00]I know Canandians don't require a visa, but I'm not sure about Chinese citizens.
[00:32.00]LiMing:Yes,I think we do.How do I do that?
[00:33.00]Jenny:You must apply for your visa at the Australian embassy.
[00:34.00]Can you ask one of the supervisors of your trip? They will probably know.
[00:35.00]LiMing:Good idea! The next question is what I should pack.
[00:36.00]I can only take one bag besides my carryon.
[00:37.00]I'm not a very good packer.
[00:38.00]Every time I go on a trip I take so many things that I never use,
[00:39.00]and usually forget one or two things that I really need.
[00:40.00]Last summer,I got on an airplane wearing just shorts,a T-shirt and sandals.
[00:41.00]I had packed some nice clothes to wear out at night,
[00:42.00]but I forgot to bring socks!I had to waste so much time shopping for socks!
[00:43.00]Jenny:That's my point!If you had made a list,that wouldn't have happened.
[00:44.00]LiMing:That's why I'm asking you for advice!
[00:45.00]What else should I be aware of?
[00:46.00]Jenny:When you are packing,
[00:47.00]remember that the airlines are very strict
[00:48.00]about the items that you can bring in your carry-on luggage.
[00:49.00]You can't bring dangerous things, for example fireworks or pocker knives.
[00:50.00]LiMing:That's rather strict, isn't it?Do they search every single bag?
[00:51.00]Jenny:All carry-on luggage goes through the scanner
[00:52.00]but they don't actually open every single one.
[00:53.00]That means they choose a certain number
[00:54.00]of bags on each flight and ask the owner to unpack everything.
[00:55.00]LiMing:Oh,I see.Jenny, what did you do about spending money?
[00:56.00]I have to be sure I don't run out of money,
[00:57.00]but I am nervous about carrying too much cash with me.
[00:58.00]Jenny:Good thinkin,LiMing.You are absolutely right.
[00:59.00]Some people order traveller's cheques from their banks.
[-1:00.00]They work like cash, except that if they are stolen you can get them replaced.
[-1:-1.00]Nowadays,though,many people use banking cards or credit cards.
[-1:-2.00]In most countries around the world,
[-1:-3.00]you can access your own bank account with your banking card.
[-1:-4.00]When you withdraw money in Australia,
[-1:-5.00]the money will come to you in Australian dollars, [-1:-6.00]and the correct amount of Chinese yuan(according to the exchange rate)
[-1:-7.00]will be deducted from your account.
[-1:-8.00]LiMing:Yes,it sounds"easy as pie".
[-1:-9.00]How do you like the new idion I learned in English class today?
[-1:10.00]Jenny:Great!I think you are going to have a wonderful time in Australia
[-1:11.00]because you will be able to speak English to all the new friends you meet.
[-1:12.00]Let's talk again soon.
[-1:13.00]I love sharing the excitement of planning a trip with you.
[-1:14.00]Bye for now.
[-1:15.00]Let's singing song
[-1:16.00]SECTION 2 MEANING THROUGH PRACTICE

[-1:20.00]To find out, listen to the first half of Jenny and Li Ming's conversation.
[-1:21.00]Then,match the events to the correct places on the timeline.

[-1:24.00]SECTION 4 READING FOR TRIP PLANNING
[-1:25.00]Tips on Planning a Trip
[-1:26.00]Brian was given an assignment to do some research on planning a trip.
[-1:27.00]He read some travel guides, searched on the Internet,
[-1:28.00]and consulted a travel agency.
[-1:29.00]Here's what Brian found out from different sources.
[-1:30.00]Although travelling in China may be different from travelling abroad,
[-1:31.00]these tips may also help you plan a better trip,
[-1:32.00]especially when you want to travel to other countries in the world.
[-1:33.00]Perhaps the hardest part of travelling is planning.
[-1:34.00]Even if you have decided on a destination,
[-1:35.00]there are so many different choices on how to get there,
[-1:36.00]where to stay and what to do.
[-1:37.00]If you are going to a foreign country,
[-1:38.00]there are the additional tasks of getting your travel documents in order,
[-1:39.00]such as passports, visas and immunization records.
[-1:40.00]When Should You Start Planning?
[-1:41.00]A lot depends on where you are going, why you are going,
[-1:42.00]how long the trip is,and the time of year you plan to go.
[-1:43.00]Travel during the"low season"
[-1:44.00]to your destination can be planned much later than a trip during the"high season."
[-1:45.00]In general a domestic weekend get-away requires four weeks planning.
[-1:46.00]For a seven-day domestic trip,allow eitht weeks.
[-1:47.00]However,foreign independent travel needs between three
[-1:48.00]and six months preparation and planning.
[-1:49.00]Airline Reservation Checklist
[-1:50.00]When planning air travel, one of the most important rules

[-3:-8.00]The Amazon River is noe of the longest rivers in the world,
[-3:-9.00]approximately 6450km long, second only to the Nile River in Africa at 6656km long.
[-3:10.00]At its widest point the Amazon can be 11km wide during the dry season.
[-3:11.00]During the rainy season it can be up to 40km wide.
[-3:12.00]Where the Amazon opens at its estuary, the river is over 325km wide!
[-3:13.00]The Amazon was named after a band of women warriors
[-3:14.00]known as Amazoons in a Greek legend.
[-3:15.00]When Spanish explorers discovered this river,
[-3:16.00]they were attached by a group of Indians wearing headdresses and grass skirts.
[-3:17.00]The Indians reminded the explorers of the women warriors in the legend.
