He opened his eyes, and they were hungry. Not in a way to make me fear, but rather to tightenthe muscles in the pit of my stomach and send my pulse hammering through my veins again.
他睜開了眼睛，眼里寫滿了饑渴。這不僅僅讓我感到了某種程度的害怕，也讓我的胃部的肌肉緊繃起來，還讓我的脈搏再次在血管里捶打起來。
"I wish," he whispered, "I wish you could feel the… complexity… the confusion… I feel. Thatyou could understand."
“我希望，”他耳語道，“我真希望你可以感受到那種……復雜……混亂……我所感受到的一切。那樣你就能理解了。”
He raised his hand to my hair, then carefully brushed it across my face.
他把手伸向我的頭發(fā)，然后小心地把它們從我臉上拂開。
"Tell me," I breathed.
“告訴我。”我喘息著說道。
"I don't think I can. I've told you, on the one hand, the hunger — the thirst — that, deplorablecreature that I am, I feel for you. And I think you can understand that, to an extent. Though" — he half-smiled — "as you are not addicted to any illegal substances, you probably can'tempathize completely.

"But…" His fingers touched my lips lightly, making me shiver again.

"There are other hungers. Hungers I don't even understand, that are foreign to me."

"I may understand that better than you think."

"I'm not used to feeling so human. Is it always like this?"

"For me?" I paused. "No, never. Never before this."

He held my hands between his. They felt so feeble in his iron strength.

"I don't know how to be close to you," he admitted. "I don't know if I can."

I leaned forward very slowly, cautioning him with my eyes. I placed my cheek against his stonechest. I could hear his breath, and nothing else.
我極慢地向前靠過去，用自己的眼睛警告著他別動。我把臉頰緊貼在他巖石般的胸膛上。我能聽見他的呼吸，但除此以外別無他物。
"This is enough," I sighed, closing my eyes.
“這就夠了。”我嘆息著，閉上了眼睛。
In a very human gesture, he put his arms around me and pressed his face against my hair.
他做了一個非常人類的姿勢，他用胳膊環(huán)住我，把臉貼在我的頭發(fā)上。、
"You're better at this than you give yourself credit for," I noted.
“你比你自己夸獎過的還要擅長這些事。”我指出來。
"I have human instincts — they may be buried deep, but they're there."
“我擁有人類的直覺——它們也許被埋藏得很深，但還是有的。”
