Every human society has rules covering marriage.In Britain it is illegal to marry under the age of 18 without your parents' permission and an offence to marry at all under the age of 16.It's also against the law to have more than one husband or wife at the same time.Anyone who breaks this law may go to prison.You may marry your first cousin but you can't marry anyone who is a closer relative than this.
In some societies the rules are stricter.There are places where the men must marry outside their family.For the Nuer tribe in Sudan this means that a man usually has to find a wife in a different village because the people in his village belong to the same family .The Nuer say,"We marry those with whom we fight." In this way friendship is created between enemy villages.
