霍金1億美元尋智慧外星人

Renowned physicist Stephen Hawking and Russian billionaire Yuri Milner are pushing the search for extraterrestrial life into higher gear. The pair said Monday the $100m program funded by Milner will combine unprecedented computing capacity with the world's most powerful telescopes in a search of the heavens. Milner said the search will be entirely transparent and will rely on open-source software so findings can be shared throughout the world.

著名物理學(xué)家史蒂芬·霍金和俄羅斯億萬富豪尤里·米爾納的聯(lián)合將外星人搜索推向了一個(gè)全新的高度。兩人20日透露，將由米爾納出資1億美元，以前所未有的方式充分利用計(jì)算機(jī)技術(shù)和世界上最強(qiáng)大的望遠(yuǎn)鏡，開啟太空搜尋。米爾納表示，搜尋將全程透明，且使用開源軟件，保證最終的發(fā)現(xiàn)成果由全世界共享。

外星人用英文表示可以是alien，這個(gè)詞也有外國人、陌生的等含義。此外上文中的extraterrestrial life可以表示外星生命，這是個(gè)天文學(xué)名詞。ET也可以表示外星人，是extraterrestrial的縮寫。智慧外星人即extraterrestrial intelligence。此次尋找外星人計(jì)劃的英文為search for extraterrestrial intelligence，簡稱SETI。

在此次倫敦皇家科學(xué)學(xué)會尋找外星生命跡象的啟動儀式上，霍金說：“在無限的茫茫宇宙中(in an infinite universe)，一定存在著其它形式的生命( other occurrences of life)?；蛟S外星生命會正盯著我們看呢。不管怎樣，這都是最重要的問題。是時(shí)候有人來找出這個(gè)問題的答案了，去尋找地球以外的生命(search for life beyond Earth)。弄清楚我們到底是不是黑暗中孤獨(dú)的存在，這點(diǎn)對我們很重要。”
