For Kelly Ripa, a trip to the salon is a real hairum scarum.
The talk show host talked about her outstanding issues with getting her haircut on Wednesday's episode of Live With Kelly & Mark, blaming both styling maintenance and a previous Carol Brady-esque chop for her fear of the barber's chair.
Ripa specifically addressed her issues with cutting her hair short and the inevitable regret she experiences once she does it. "Yes, I want to get a haircut until I get the haircut," said Ripa, according to PEOPLE. "Because once I get the haircut, then I have to maintain the haircut. And when your hair is this length, this is a good ponytail length. So, like, when I come to work, my hair is done for me and it looks nice."
The host also pointed to photos of her from high school as an example of her own lack of skill styling her own hair.
Her cohost and husband, Mark Consuelos, then brought up a haircut from a few years prior, which he had suggested, referencing Michelle Pfeiffer's look at the time. The cut turned out rather disastrously. "It ended up looking like Carol Brady, and I just didn’t understand how it happened," he said. "I was like, ‘Wait, what happened, I saw Michelle Pfeiffer five minutes ago! Now it’s Carol Brady!’ So now when you ask me, I say, ‘Babe, do what you want to do. Just do what you want to do.’"
Though Ripa rebutted that he indirectly prevents her from giving into her urge to chop her hair off. "No, that’s not what you say," she added. "What he says is, 'Do what you want to do, but just know that you’re going to be miserable as soon as you cut your hair off.’ That’s what you say. So that discourages me."
Ripa also called for haircut sample pics to reflect a wider diversity of ages and the reality of women's styling limitations and challenges. She specifically mentioned the current trend of the "bixie," a short cut that is a mix of a bob and pixie.
"First of all, they never use anyone over the age of 20 for any of these," she said, holding up a photo of a woman with a bixie. "So look how cute she looks. Fashiony, beautiful gorgeous. Gorgeous, amazing, Well, what I want them to show me is the picture of these women out in the wild, on their own, not under the aid of a hairstylist after they’ve woken up in the morning and show me what the hair looks like. Show me what the hair looks like after it’s taken the shape of the pillow and the bed sheet. Or the hat — it’s cold now."
Ripa currently has longer hair, but we'll see if she's seduced by the popularity of the bixie. After all, with a daily talk show, how often does she have to do her own hair anyway?
