[00:05.47] It's about a high school graduation and specifically about two words written on the program for that graduation ceremony. [00:13.06] The two words can have religious connotations, and one of this year's graduates, the valedictorian, [00:17.55] in fact, is an atheist. [00:19.37] He does not follow a religion; he does not believe in God. [00:22.34] And he wanted a change. [00:24.11] Not everyone agrees. [00:26.13] Stop anywhere in Poteet, and you 'll start hearing the talk of the town: religion taken out of graduation. [00:32.53] But they need to stop and remember nothing is given to us without our good Lord. [00:36.32] It's even on the front page of the local paper. [00:39.01] I 'm a Christian. [00:39.45] I do not think it should be taken out. [00:41.10] But if that person feels that strongly about it, I think they have that right as an American to act that way. [00:46.03] For it to be changed on us all of a sudden, I do not feel like it's right for anybody. [00:51.46] The issue surrounds Poteet High School valedictorian, Mark Reyes, who is an atheist. [00:56.52] Reyes says he's not trying to be malicious, rather just uphold the Constitution. [01:01.21] We are all very different people and in order for us to survive in unison, we have to have something keeping order and that is the Constitution. [01:07.43] Reyes recently filed a complaint with Americans United for Separation of Church and State, stating that Poteet ISD endorses prayer by having" invocation" and" benediction" within graduation ceremonies. [01:19.16] I know it's been tradition, but tradition is not always right. [01:21.44] The district has replaced the controversial words with" opening" and" closing remarks" to comply with the law. [01:27.40] However, students giving speeches are legally allowed to make religious references. [01:32.03] As times evolve, I think that we need to make sure that we are -- we honor those beliefs, [01:39.06] we honor their rights with trying to remain true to tradition. [01:44.05] Superintendent Castillo says they are not taking any chances, especially since, he says, a neighboring school district just spent thousands of dollars in legal fees to fight the exact same issue last year -- That district being Medina Valley. [01:57.26] Officials there just wrapped up a year long legal process. [02:00.49] While Reyes is happy Poteet ISD has complied, he does not want this issue to overshadow graduation day. The big question that remains is whether Tyler's teacher accepts it today.
