三、指示代詞的用法

1.this，these表示“近指”；that，those表示“遠指”

This is a tractor and that is a combine.這是一臺拖拉機，那是一臺聯(lián)合收割機。

These are jeeps.Those are heavy trucks.這些是吉普車，那些是載重汽車。

2.this和these常指后面要講到的事情；that常指前面講過的事情

What I want to tell you is this：the meeting is to put off till Friday.

我要告訴你的是：會議推遲到星期五開。

He had a bad cold.That is why he didn’t attend the meeting.

他患了重感冒。那就是他為什么沒參加會議的原因。

3.this，that的特殊用法

（1）在電話用語中指自己用this，指對方用that。

Hello！ This is Mary.你好！我是瑪麗。

Is that Jack speaking？ 你是杰克嗎？

Who is that calling？ 請問是誰？

（2）this和that 可作程度副詞，相當于so。

Is the problem that easy？ 問題有那么簡單嗎？

It’s about this high.大約這么高。

I didn’t think we’d walked that far.我未從料到我們會走這么遠。

（3）用于固定句式中

with these words 說完這話　　　that’s to say=that is 也就是說

That’s it.對啦?！　　　　　　?That’s right.是的，對的。

That’s all.僅此而已?！　　　　hat’s all right.不用謝，沒關(guān)系。

this way and that 這樣那樣　　 This way，please.這邊走。

in this way 用這種方法　　　　 That will do.夠了，行了。
