Miss Jordan: What a clever girl you have , Mrs Smith. Joan is the first in my class this term.

Mrs Smith: Thank you , Miss Jordan, we owe all this to the primary health care team. We are lucky to have foundout her hearing defect at the age of three . MiSS Hooper waw working as a health visitor in the team. It was she who discovered her defect at her first visit to Joan. form www.med66.com

Miss Jordan: I didn't know that she had such a trouble three years age . And she appears quite a normal child with her senses. How could you be so succssful?

Mrs Smith: Well, MissHooper did a full hearing test for Joan right after her visit. We were arranged to see several doctors, including the primary physician who was then another member of the primary health care team, an audologist and an otolaryngologist. Miss Hooper paid us frequent visits to support us during that period. We were extremely worried because Joan was found to hav a significant heraing loss in both ears. You know she is our only child and the only grandchild on both sides of the family.

Miss Jordan: You are really lucky. And has she been to any kind of school to improve her speech?

Mrs Smith: We sent her to the local playgroup run by the Children Fund, a voluntary organisation which runs playgroups throughout the country. It was a desirable place to help her with speech stimulation and she could play with other children.

Miss Jordan: Did you send her to a speech therapist?

Mrs Smith : No, she was not referred to a speech therapist. It was thought that, if treatment proved successful, she would be able to attend normal school and would not require a hearing aid……

Miss Jordan: I see, anyhow she is a clever girl.
