公司是否該合并、是否該涉足新產(chǎn)業(yè)，這種讓回答“Yes /No”都格外困難的抉擇其實(shí)不少。如果你是公司決策者，要向員工宣布一個(gè)“重要而難解”的問(wèn)題，該怎么用英文描述？

1 　the million dollar question　重要卻很難回答的問(wèn)題

英國(guó)廣播公司（BBC）曾以“Being better or worse off in an independent Scotland is the million dollar question…”為引言，探討蘇格蘭獨(dú)立后會(huì)更好還是更差。the million dollar question直譯是“百萬(wàn)元的問(wèn)題”，引申為“重要卻難回答的問(wèn)題”。

例：

The million dollar question is: should we give up what we have and explore the new market?（是否該放棄現(xiàn)有的一切投入新市場(chǎng)？這是我們都想知道卻難以回答的問(wèn)題。）

2 　in a quandary　面臨一項(xiàng)困難的抉擇

美國(guó)《華爾街日?qǐng)?bào)》（The Wall Street Journal ）針對(duì)蘇格蘭獨(dú)立報(bào)道，有一句話(huà)：“Scottish nationalists are in a quandary: how to dissolve the three-century bond with the United Kingdom while preserving their monetary link with the British pound.”quandary是可數(shù)名詞，指“困惑、窘境”，當(dāng)你“處于不易做決定的情況”時(shí)，就可以說(shuō)I'm in a quandary。

例：

Redundancy is an effective but painful way to solve the company's financial problem. The chairman is in a quandary.（解決公司的財(cái)務(wù)問(wèn)題，裁員是有效但痛苦的方式。董事長(zhǎng)面臨著艱難的抉擇。）

3 　hang in the balance　難以預(yù)料

加拿大《環(huán)球郵報(bào)》（The Globe and Mail ）曾有一則標(biāo)題“Britain's‘family of nations’ hangs in the balance”，點(diǎn)出蘇格蘭是否從英國(guó)獨(dú)立出來(lái)處于未定之天。如果一件事的未來(lái)發(fā)展混沌不明，讓人無(wú)法預(yù)知，就可以用hang in the balance。

例：

The US tech slowdown began and clobbered our clients. The future for the company hangs in the balance.（美國(guó)科技產(chǎn)業(yè)開(kāi)始衰退，重創(chuàng)了我們的客戶(hù)，公司的未來(lái)難以預(yù)料。）
