老子《道德經(jīng)》英譯第十七章

　　【原文】

　　太上，不知有之;其次，親而譽(yù)之;其次，畏之;其次，侮之。

　　信不足焉，有不信焉。

　　悠兮其貴言。功成事遂，百姓皆謂：我自然。

　　【現(xiàn)代漢語(yǔ)】

　　最好的國(guó)家政治形態(tài)是人民根本感覺(jué)不到管理、統(tǒng)治者的存在;其次一等的形態(tài)是，人民愿意親近并贊美統(tǒng)治者;更次一等則是人民畏懼統(tǒng)治者;最次一等的是人民厭惡、憎恨統(tǒng)治者。

　　統(tǒng)治階層的誠(chéng)信不足是導(dǎo)致人民不信任它的根本原因。

　　最好的政治形態(tài)中，統(tǒng)治者與人民悠然并存，絕不輕易發(fā)號(hào)施令。國(guó)家事務(wù)井井有條，百姓都說(shuō)：“我們本來(lái)就是這樣的。”

　　【譯文】

　　The people of the state do not know that there is the rulers and governor in the first-class political structure; in the secondary class, people love them and praise them; in inferior people be in feared of them; in inferior people despise and hat them.

　　The governor has not good faith is the basic reason why people do not trust in them.

　　In the first-class political structure, the governor gets along with people easily and never issue orders inconsiderately. But, the national affairs are all in perfect order at the same time. The people all said, 'We are as we are, of ourselves!'

　　【備注】

　　之所以崇敬老子、仰慕老子，崇拜老子，還有一個(gè)很重要的原因——多少有一點(diǎn)烏托邦的色彩，但我覺(jué)得天下大同，一定會(huì)實(shí)現(xiàn)的。在人類真正認(rèn)識(shí)了自己在大自然中的角色，并能默默扮演這一角色、承擔(dān)這一角色所應(yīng)承擔(dān)的責(zé)任的時(shí)候，而且是所有人都能這樣的時(shí)候。

　　我滿懷信心地期待著，每一個(gè)人其實(shí)都應(yīng)有如此期待。
