老子《道德經(jīng)》英譯第十五章

　　【原文】

　　古之善為道者，微妙玄通，深不可識。夫唯不可識，故強為之容：

　　豫兮若冬涉川;

　　猶兮若畏四鄰;

　　儼兮其若客;

　　渙兮其若凌釋;

　　敦兮其若樸;

　　曠兮其若谷;

　　混兮其若濁;

　　澹(dàn)兮其若海;

　　飂(liù)兮若無止。

　　孰能濁以靜之徐清?孰能安以動之徐生?

　　保此道者，不欲盈。夫唯不盈，故能蔽而新成。

　　【現(xiàn)代漢語】

　　自古以來善于學(xué)習(xí)和應(yīng)用‘道’的人，能夠深刻理解并實踐‘道’的微妙玄通，所以他們表現(xiàn)的深不可測。因為他們深不可測，所以我們只能用以下的語言來勉強地形容他們：

　　他們處事謹慎而不冒進，就像冬天行走在江河之上;警覺而不放肆，就像時刻處于危機四伏的環(huán)境中。

　　他們的為人莊重嚴謹，總是遵從作客一樣的禮節(jié);和藹有親和力，就像正在消融的冰雪;敦厚質(zhì)樸就像未經(jīng)雕琢的素材。

　　他們的心態(tài)曠達如同空曠的的山谷;渾厚深沉像幽深的水;沉靜如同無垠的大海;形跡飄逸而沒有止境。

　　誰能夠在動蕩中使自己內(nèi)心沉靜而清澈，誰能在安逸中爆發(fā)激情與生命力。他們就是那些善于學(xué)習(xí)和應(yīng)用‘道’的人。他們能夠不求自滿，所以能夠不斷地推陳出新。

　　【英譯】

　　The people who are good at study and fulfill 'Tao' can understand deeply and practise Tao's subtle principle. So they appear so profound and immesurable that we just picture them constrainedly in following words:

　　They handle matters prudently like those who wade through a stream in winter; they are vigilant like those who are in the riskful area.

　　They treat other people gravely like those who always obey the proprieties of guest; they are kind and amiable just like melting ice; they are honest and sincere as wood that has not been fashioned into anything.來源：考試大

　　They are broad-minded like vacant valley; profound like deep water; still like serene ocean. Their movement and expression are elegant and no limit.

　　They are people who can make heart calm and limpid in roily environment; can create passion and vitality in easeful environment. They never are self-satisfied in studying and fulfilling 'Tao'. Therefore they could get rid of the stale and bring forth the fresh constantly.

　　【備注】

　　“不欲盈”，太難解釋了。雖然還沒有悟老子之道，但甚能體會類似佛教中“不可說”這樣的道理了。“為學(xué)日益，為道日損”。“為道”也是“為學(xué)”，那到底是“益”還是“損”呢?還得說“不可說”(或者說還未悟道)，真正得道，才能既“不欲盈”，同時還能“新成”。

　　但作為凡夫俗子，并未被圣人遺棄，他們給我們指出了所謂“速成”之路：“濁以靜之徐清，安以動之徐生”，引用古代文人的書房對聯(lián)來解釋：“剛?cè)兆x經(jīng)，柔日讀史”——偏激、乖張之時，讀經(jīng)典，心平氣和;沉淪、渙散之日，看史書，激發(fā)熱情。
