The bar for business casual has gone way down, a new survey finds.
More than 90 percent of managers believe that, over the course of the past decade, the workplace has become significantly less formal, a new survey finds.
Global staffing firm Accountemps polled more than 2,800 senior managers in the United States and discovered that nearly all of them (91 percent) felt a number of previously unacceptable office behaviors have become standard in the past 10 years.
More than half said that using foul language and bringing pets to the office — previously highly stigmatized acts — had recently become more acceptable. Another linguistic development: emoji use, which 30 percent of respondents said is acceptable, along with casual lingo, in work emails.
In terms of office-appropriate looks, there’s been a sea change this century, with tattoos, nontraditional piercings, casual dress and dyed hair now considered sufficiently professional, a third of managers felt. This bodes well for New Yorkers, as nearly 1 in 3 sport body ink.
There are a number of reasons for this progression, the survey found, with loosened societal standards most heavily cited, followed by a shift of companies now catering to younger workers. The influence of tech culture on other fields was also given credit.
Some behavior, however, is still off-limits. Approximately 2 in 5 respondents felt that playing music without headphones and streaming sports events remains unacceptable behavior at the office. Putting up political decor, watching political events and discussing politics also remain problematic desk-side manner.
