剩女指的是那些將近30歲還沒結(jié)婚的職業(yè)女性。中國(guó)人口近14億，想找個(gè)丈夫并不難，但考慮到社會(huì)地位，單身職業(yè)女性的選擇就不那么多了。政府制定了計(jì)劃生育政策，中國(guó)文化傳統(tǒng)又偏愛男孩，導(dǎo)致男性人口多于女性人口。2011年的最新人口普查顯示，20世紀(jì)70年代出生的同齡人中，單身男性的數(shù)量是單身女性的兩倍。上海市政府定期舉辦相親活動(dòng)，幫助女性擺脫單身。有2萬(wàn)名單身男女參加了五月舉辦的相親會(huì)。
Leftover women refer to professional women who have not married by their late 20s. There are plenty of men to choose from China's nearly 1.4 billion people but social status can conspire against single professional woman. There are more men than women in China's population due to the government's one-child policy and a cultural preference for boys. The latest census in 2011 showed there were twice as many single men born in the 1970s as women of the same age. The Shanghai city government tries to help women by arranging regular match-making events. One in May attracted 20,000 single men and women.
