Nanjing University is a state key comprehensive university and it functions directly under the Ministry of Education. It is also one of the first group of universities admitted to“Project 211”and“Project 985".It is one of the institutions of higher learning in China with the longest history.

Nanjing University is located in the ancient capital of six dynasties-Nanjing Today，Nanjing University consists of two campuses，one in Gulou and the other in Pukou with a total area of more than 240 hectares(nearly 600 acres ).It is one of the top universities in China，with beautiful campuses and modern teaching and research facilities. Its current President is Professor Jiang Shusheng，a physicist. The University celebrates its anniversary on May 20 of each year.

Many famous scientists and scholars，such as Li Ruiqing，Wu Youxun，Zhu Kezhen，Mao Yisheng，Liu Yizheng，Hu Xiaoshi，Tao Xingzhi，Guo Bingwen， Chen Heqin，Tang Yongtong，Ma Yinchu，Li Shutong，Xiong.Qinglai，Tong Dizhou，Jin Shanbao，Wen Yiduo，Zhang Daqian，Xu Beihong，F(xiàn)u Baoshi，Yan Jici，Wu Jianxiong，Li Guoding，Luo Jialun，Gu Yuxiu，Li Fangxun，Wu Mi，Zhu Guangya，Zhao Zhongyao，Pearl S. Buck，Yang Xingfo，Lu Shuxiang，Liang Xi，Dai Anbang，Chen Baichen and Kuang Yaming，have studied or worked here.

Since China's reform and opening，Nanjing University has gradually developed multi-disciplinary programs in humanities，social sciences，natural sciences，technological sciences，life sciences，modern engineering and management. At present，Nanjing University has 17 schools with 50 departments. It runs 74 undergraduate programs，186 master's programs(with 6 programs designated by the University itself )，7 professional master's programs;23 primary disciplines for doctoral degrees，and 139 Ph. D. programs(with 9 programs designated by the University itself) as well as 18 post-doctoral stations. In addition，the University has 28 national key disciplines，10 provincial key disciplines，and 6 national key laboratories.It also houses 11 national training bases for the research and teaching personnel in basic sciences and liberal arts，and 3 bases for humanities and social sciences research appraised by the Chinese Ministry of Education.

改革開(kāi)放以來(lái)，南京大學(xué)逐步形成了人文、社會(huì)、自然、技術(shù)、生命、現(xiàn)代工程私管理等多學(xué)科協(xié)調(diào)發(fā)展的格局。目前，南京大學(xué)設(shè)有17個(gè)學(xué)院，52個(gè)系，擁有本科專(zhuān)業(yè)76個(gè)，碩士學(xué)位授權(quán)點(diǎn)207個(gè)(其中9個(gè)為學(xué)校自主設(shè)置)，專(zhuān)業(yè)碩士學(xué)位7個(gè)，博士學(xué)位授權(quán)一級(jí)學(xué)科點(diǎn)23個(gè)，博士點(diǎn)139個(gè)(其中9個(gè)為學(xué)校自主設(shè)置)，博士后流動(dòng)站18個(gè)，國(guó)家重點(diǎn)學(xué)科28個(gè)，江蘇省重點(diǎn)學(xué)科10個(gè)，國(guó)家重點(diǎn)實(shí)驗(yàn)室6個(gè)，國(guó)家基礎(chǔ)學(xué)科研究和應(yīng)用人才培養(yǎng)基地11個(gè)，教育部人文社會(huì)科學(xué)重點(diǎn)研究基地3個(gè)。

Among the nearly 2 000 teaching faculty，there are 654 full professors，including 27 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences，3 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering，four academicians of the Third-World Academy of Sciences，and one academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences. There are 2 premier scientists for the“National Key Development Program in Basic Research”(Project 973)，and also 19 middle-aged and young scholars nationally appraised for remarkable contributions，70 recipients of National Outstanding Youth Fund，42 specially-appointed professors or lecture professors on“Cheung Kong Scholars Program”，29 scholars supported by the“Supporting Plan for New Century's Outstanding Talents" of the Ministry of Education，4 teachers awarded the honor of“Outstanding College Lecturers"，and 574 Ph. D. supervisors.

Nanjing University has made remarkable achievements in personnel training.At present，the University has over 41 600 students，including 9 964 Ph. D. and mater's degree students. With a solid academic foundation and strong potential for career development，the graduates of Nanjing University have been well received by employers in China. In the international academic circles，seven graduates of Nanjing University have won the American President's Awards. Many attainments and findings from research projects have been named after the graduate students and their supervisors of Nanjing University，such as"Zhou-Gong:Distributing Mutual-Changes Theory" and“Wu:Solidarity Theory".

Nanjing University provides a good environment for teaching and research. Its library contains over 4. 29 million volumes，ranking among the top ones of all the universities in China. There are currently 128 institutes of various types，89 interdisciplinary research centers and some large teaching，research and experiment facilities such as the Analysis Center，the Network and Information Center，and the Educational Technology Center.

Nanjing University is one of the most active universities in China in its international academic exchanges. Since 1979，it has set up links with more than 180 universities and institutions in nearly 30 countries，employed over 1 800 foreign scholars to teach and give lectures，held more than 120 international conferences，and more than 2 500 teachers have been sent aboard to pursue higher degrees and conduct research. In the meantime，more than 6 000 international students have studied at this university. Nobel Prize laureates， such as Professors Chen Ning Yang，Tsung Dao Lee，Ilya Prigogine，Sheldon Glashow and Robert Mandel have been conferred Honorary Doctorates，or Honorary Professorship by the university.

南京大學(xué)是我國(guó)國(guó)際學(xué)術(shù)交流活動(dòng)最活躍的大學(xué)之一。1979年以來(lái)，南大已與近30個(gè)國(guó)家的180多所高校和科研機(jī)構(gòu)建立了學(xué)術(shù)交流和研究合作關(guān)系，主辦國(guó)際會(huì)議120余次，2 500余人次的教師出國(guó)留學(xué)、訪問(wèn)或進(jìn)修，聘請(qǐng)外國(guó)專(zhuān)家學(xué)者1 800多人次來(lái)校講學(xué)與合作，6 000多名海外留學(xué)生先后在南大進(jìn)修學(xué)習(xí)。李政道、丁‘肇中、楊振寧、普列高津、格拉肖、芒德?tīng)柕榷辔恢Z貝爾獎(jiǎng)獲得者被授予名譽(yù)教授或名譽(yù)博士稱(chēng)號(hào)。

Glorious History 歷史變遷

The University dates back to 1902 when Sanjiang Normal School was founded，and then evolved as Liangjiang Normal School，Nanjing Higher Normal School，National Southeast University，the Fourth Zhongshan University，and National Central University. On August 8，1949，the National Central University was renamed National Nanjing University. In October 1950，as required by the Ministry of Education，the name was changed to Nanjing University. In 1952，when a nationwide readjustment of universities took place，some schools，such as the School of Engineering and the School of Agriculture，were separated from the University;meanwhile，the University merged with the School of Liberal Arts and the School of Sciences of the University of Nanking，which was founded in 1888. The new university remained Nanjing University and the campus of Nanjing University moved from Sipailou to Gulou.

1902年創(chuàng)建以來(lái)，她先后經(jīng)歷三江師范學(xué)堂、兩江師范學(xué)堂、南京高等師范學(xué)校、國(guó)_立東南大學(xué)、第四中山大學(xué)、國(guó)立中央大學(xué)等時(shí)期;1949年8月8日，由國(guó)_立中央大學(xué)更名為國(guó)立南京大學(xué);1950年10月按教育部規(guī)定，去掉“國(guó)立”三字，遷名南京大學(xué);1952年全國(guó)高校院系調(diào)整，南京大學(xué)調(diào)整出工學(xué)、農(nóng)學(xué)、師范等部分院系后與創(chuàng)辦于1888年的金陵大學(xué)的文學(xué)院、理學(xué)院等合并，仍名南京大學(xué)，并將校址從四牌樓遷至鼓樓金大原址。
