A: What have you got planned for the winter holidays?

寒假你有什么計(jì)劃呢？

B: Actually, I'm off to Italy.

說(shuō)實(shí)話(huà)，我準(zhǔn)備去意大利。

A: Really? I went there in 2001, will you go to the Vatican?

真的嗎？2001年我去過(guò)那兒，你打算去梵蒂岡嗎？

B: I plan to, I think it's something that you cannot miss. It's funny, but everyone thinks. The Vatican is an ancient place, but in fact it dates back t0 1929.

我打算去，我想那里還真不能錯(cuò)過(guò)。有趣的是，人人都以為梵蒂岡是個(gè)古老的地方，但實(shí)際上它的歷史只能追溯到1929年。

A: Yes, when Mussolini and the Pope signed the Lateran Treaty. Also, it's the world's largest church.

B: Isn't there a special place where the Pope appears, too?

A: Yes, there's a balcony which he comes out on, but only on speall occasions.

B: What about St. Peter's? Is it as fabulous as they say?

那圣彼得教堂呢？是不是跟人們所說(shuō)的一樣神奇??？

A: To be honest, it doesn't look like much from the outside, you don't appreciate its true beauty and enormity until you are inside.

坦白地說(shuō)，從外面看不出什么，直到進(jìn)入里面才能欣賞到它真正的美麗和宏偉之處。

B:It really is huge, then?

它真的很大，是吧？

A: Oh my goodness! Not just huge, sensational! When you step inside you just cannot believe it, I was lost for words.

哦，它不是一般地大，簡(jiǎn)直讓人驚嘆！你走進(jìn)去時(shí)，簡(jiǎn)直沒(méi)法相信，我都無(wú)法用言語(yǔ)表達(dá)。

B:It sounds like you had a real religious experience there.

聽(tīng)起來(lái)好像你在那兒真的對(duì)宗教有不少體驗(yàn)。

A: Oh yes, I believe that even someone without faith couldn't fail to be touched by something higher while inside St. Peter's.

是的。我相信進(jìn)了圣彼得教堂，沒(méi)有人不會(huì)被它里面恢宏的氣勢(shì)所觸動(dòng)，哪怕是不信教的人。

B: How big is it really? I read that the pillars inside are fifty feet across, that can't be true, can it?

它到底有多大呢？我從書(shū)上看到說(shuō)里面的柱子直徑有50英尺，那不可能是真的，對(duì)吧？

A: Honestly, just wait until you are inside.  The pillars are massive, and even if there are hundreds of tourists, you never feel cramped. The atmosphere is always so light and airy.

真的，等你走到里頭再看吧。柱子相當(dāng)高大，即使里面有幾百個(gè)游客，你也不會(huì)覺(jué)得擁擠。里面的氣氛也總是很輕松．快活。

B: Also, I read that the baldacchino is pretty big, too.

而且我聽(tīng)說(shuō)青銅祭臺(tái)大華蓋也很宏偉。

A: Pretty big! It's more than half the size of Niagara Falls! While you are there, you cannot forget to visit the Sistine Chapel, which is very impressive

相當(dāng)大，比尼亞加拉瀑布的一半還要大。你到了那兒時(shí)，別忘了去參觀一下西斯廷教堂，那也會(huì)給你留下很深刻的印象。

B: I'm guessing nothing is as impressive as St. Peter's, I can't wait to see it.

我想沒(méi)什么能比得上圣彼得大教堂給人的印像更深，我都等不及想去看了。
