A: Hi, Kate, I've heard that you’re preparing to study abroad. Which university have you applied  to?

B: I have applied to Yale University.
 
我申請(qǐng)了耶魯大學(xué)。
 
A: Will you go there alone?
 
你一個(gè)人去嗎？
 
B: Yes, I’ll be there alone in a one-year program. I’ve never been outside China. I’ll miss you.
 
是啊，我一個(gè)人去那兒一年。我從來(lái)沒(méi)出過(guò)國(guó)，我會(huì)想你的。
 
A: You can send E-mails to me. And there are many Chinese students studying at Yale. They will become your new friends. You will not feel lonely.

B: You're right. By the way, do you know the first Chinese student who graduated from Yale University?

A: I’m not quite sure. You must be quite familiar.

B: You bet! It’s Yung Wing. He was an ardent patriot of modem China and a pioneer who encouraged learning from the west. Upon graduation from Yale, Yung Wing was offered opportunities to stay in the United States, but urged by his desire to apply what he had learned to the well-being of his motherland, he rejected the offers and returned to China.
 
當(dāng)然。是容閎。他是近代中國(guó)忠誠(chéng)的愛(ài)國(guó)者和向西方學(xué)習(xí)的先驅(qū)。為了用自己的知識(shí)報(bào)效祖國(guó)，從耶魯畢業(yè)后，容閎毅然拒絕了留在美國(guó)的機(jī)會(huì),回到了祖國(guó)的懷抱。
 
A: You feel proud of him.

B: Yes. Once he said, “I often wished I had never been educated, as education had unmistakably enlarged my mental and moral horizon, and revealed to me the responsibilities which the sealed eye of ignorance can never see, and sufferings and wrongs of humanities to which an uncultivated and callous nature can never be made sensitive. I had started out to get an education. What am I going to do with my education?”
 
是的。他曾說(shuō)過(guò)："我常常想，我要是沒(méi)受過(guò)教育就好了，因?yàn)榻逃@然開(kāi)闊了我精神和道德的視野，而且向我揭示了各種責(zé)任——那些無(wú)知者被蒙蔽的眼睛永遠(yuǎn)看不見(jiàn)的責(zé)任，也揭示了人類所受的苦難以及所犯下的惡行——未受過(guò)培養(yǎng)的、麻木的人們永遠(yuǎn)也不可能感覺(jué)到這些苦難和邪惡。我已經(jīng)開(kāi)始接受教育。我要用我受到的教育去做什么呢？ ”
 
A: So what’s his answer?

B: I’m impressed by his answer, “I was determined that the rising generation of China should enjoy the same educational advantages I enjoyed, so that through western education China might be regenerated, become enlightened and powerful.This was his dream that had far-reaching impact on China. He tried to persuade the Qing Dynasty government to send young Chinese to the United States to study. With the government’s eventual approval, 120 young Chinese students were sent to study in America beginning in 1872. Many of the students later returned to China and made significant contributions to China’s civil services, engineering, and the sciences, including the Father of China’s Railroad，Jeme Tien Yow.
 
他的回答令我為之動(dòng)容我下定決心，“中國(guó)新的一代人應(yīng)該享受我享受過(guò)的教育。通過(guò)西式教育，中國(guó)有可能振興起來(lái)，變得開(kāi)明和強(qiáng)大。”這就是他的夢(mèng)想，并且對(duì)中國(guó)產(chǎn)生過(guò)深遠(yuǎn)的影響。他努力說(shuō)服清政府派遣學(xué)生赴美學(xué)習(xí)。清政府最終 釆納了他的建議，從1872年開(kāi)始先后派遣了120名留學(xué)生赴美學(xué)習(xí)。這一枇留 學(xué)生回國(guó)后對(duì)于中國(guó)之現(xiàn)代化均有貢獻(xiàn)，其中包括中國(guó)鐵路之父一詹天佑。

A: OK. Is the procedure for applying to a university in the USA complicated?
 
好啊。申請(qǐng)美國(guó)大學(xué)的手續(xù)復(fù)雜嗎？
 
B: I don’t think it’s complicated. First of all，you should fill out an application form and send a recommendation letter along with your application to the university. Then, after you get the acceptance letter from the university, you should take your visa application and the acceptance letter to the U.S. Embassy for a visa interview. If you get the visa, you can go to the university.
 
我覺(jué)得不太復(fù)雜。首先填寫(xiě)申請(qǐng)表，將申請(qǐng)表和推薦信一起寄往要申請(qǐng)的大學(xué); 收到大學(xué)的錄取通知書(shū)后，帶著簽證申請(qǐng)和錄取通知書(shū)去美國(guó)大使館進(jìn)行簽證面 試;獲得簽證后，就可以去上學(xué)了。
 
A: Oh, it’s so complicated for me. Have you booked the ticket?
 
對(duì)于我來(lái)說(shuō)太復(fù)雜了。你訂機(jī)票了嗎？
 
B: Yes. I'll fly in five days.
 
訂了。五天之后的飛機(jī)。
 
A: You will realize your dream soon.

B: Yes. It’s a big deal for me! It is my dream to get into Yale.
