A: Now there's a couple that are kind of, that are not as nice. They can be positive or negative like for example a helicopter parent.

B: A helicopter parent? What's that?

A: So a helicopter parent is basically a parent that just hovers over their child all the time. They're always worried about their child. They follow them everywhere. They want to know what they're doing at all times and they just worry a lot. They're so worried...
 
直升機(jī)家長是指那些像直升機(jī)一樣一直盤旋在孩子上空的家長。他們總是為孩子感到擔(dān)心。不管孩子去哪里，他們都會一直跟著。他們隨時都想知道孩子在干什么，他們一直在擔(dān)心。因?yàn)樘珦?dān)心了……
 
B: That sounds very stressful.
 
那聽起來太有壓力了。
 
A: Yeah.
 
對。
 
B: As a parent.
 
作為家長來說。
 
A: They're always worried their child's going to get hurt or something, you know, or they just are just over-protective, I guess yeah. So are you a helicopter parent?
 
他們一直擔(dān)心孩子會受傷，我想這種家長對孩子有些過度保護(hù)了。你屬于直升機(jī)家長嗎？
 
B: No, I don't think so, no. No, I'm very happy for my daughter to have independence.
 
不是，我想我不是。我希望我的女兒能獨(dú)立。
 
A: That's good. That's good. So you don't like, if she goes outside for a few minutes or if she's, you know, you hear some clanging in the next room, you don't go rushing over.
 
這很好，很好。那如果她在外面待了幾分鐘，或是你聽到隔壁房間有叮叮當(dāng)當(dāng)?shù)穆曇?，你也不會立刻沖過去查看情況。
 
B: No. I wait for the tears before I go over.

A: Smart, smart. There's, recently because of a very popular book we have, it's called the Tiger Mom.

B: A Tiger Mum?

A: Yeah, Tiger Mom.
 
對，虎媽。
 
B: Sounds cool. Is it a positive term or is it a negative?
 
聽起來很酷。這是褒義還是貶義？
 
A: It is kind of. Actually it comes, the tiger I think comes from the Asian reference. It's like for an Asian mother and it's basically really strict, really driven, like really push your kids, make them study hard, demand good grades, demand that they do extra curricular activities, really push them to have high paying careers or successful careers, do well academically and stuff like that.
 
嗯……我想老虎這個詞是借鑒了亞洲的說法。在亞洲，虎媽指那種非常嚴(yán)厲、非常有動力的媽媽，她們一直在鞭策孩子，讓孩子努力學(xué)習(xí)，要求孩子必須取得好成績，要求他們做額外的課外活動，鞭策孩子尋求高薪工作或成功的工作，要求他們學(xué)業(yè)出色等等。
 
B: From very young, does this...?
 
從很小還是……
 
A: Yeah, from very young. The woman who wrote the book, I think it's actually called Tiger Mom and she was a Yale professor and I think she was of Chinese ancestry and she raised these very successful daughters and so she wrote a book and basically saying you need to be strict and push your kids and demand excellence. I think that's what she wrote.
 
對，從很小開始。寫《虎媽》這本書的女性是耶魯大學(xué)的教授，我想她有中國血統(tǒng)，她把女兒們培養(yǎng)得非常出色，所以她寫了這本書，告訴讀者家長要嚴(yán)格，要鞭策孩子追求卓越。我想她是要傳達(dá)這些。
 
B: Is the tiger, is it reference to like the Chinese horoscope, maybe like the characteristics of the tiger for that year?
 
虎是不是中國的生肖，就是屬虎的人的一些特征？
 
A: No. Actually I just think it has to do with being a tiger comes from Asia, I think that's it.
 
不是，我認(rèn)為應(yīng)該就是亞洲的一種老虎。我是這么認(rèn)為的。
 
B: OK, well a tiger does have a pretty kind of aggressive or driven sort of image.
 
好，老虎有時的確給人富于進(jìn)攻性、有動力的形象。
 
A: Right.
 
沒錯。
 
B: When a tiger gets something in its sights, you know, like where it comes from.
 
尤其是老虎發(fā)現(xiàn)什么的時候，可能這就是這個詞的來源吧。
 
A: Totally.
 
沒錯。
 
B: No, I'm not so much a tiger mum, no.
 
我并不是虎媽。
 
A: So you're a soccer mom.
 
你是足球媽媽。
 
B: More of a soccer mum I think, yeah.
 
我想我更像足球媽媽。
 
A: That's good. Yeah, that's what I would want, a soccer mom.
 
這很好。我覺得足球媽媽很不錯。
 
B: A soccer mum, yeah.
