What Makes an Ideal Class?

Due to cultural diversity, there are distinct differences between a Chinese class and a western one. A western class is usually given in a relaxed and lively atmosphere, where the class is centered on students and at the same time, teachers mainly act as a guide. In contrast 1 , Chinese teachers traditionally focus more on imparting knowledge and skills to their students in class and a typical Chinese class generally involves less interaction, especially one-on-one interaction, between teachers and students. It’s hard to say which one is superior to the other due to different social background.

In my opinion, an ideal class should take three factors into consideration: teacher, student and atmosphere. 2 First of all 3 , a teacher’s main task is to guide students to learn but not to cram his students. Secondly 3 , classes should be student-oriented. Students’ interests and requirements are the focus of the class. Furthermore 3 , the atmosphere should be lively, relaxed, friendly and orderly. Everyone should participate in the discussion actively and give full play to his subjective initiative in the class.

To sum up, an ideal class is one that can coordinate the relationship among these three factors. 4

理想中的課堂是什么樣的?

由于文化差異，中西方課堂之間存在著巨大的不同。西方課堂氛圍一般來說輕松又活潑，課堂以學(xué)生為中心，同時(shí)，教師主要扮演引導(dǎo)者的角色。相比之下，中國的教師傳統(tǒng)上更加注重在課堂上向?qū)W生傳授知識(shí)和技能，而且在一個(gè)典型的中國課堂上，師生互動(dòng)，尤其是一對(duì)一的互動(dòng)普遍較少。由于社會(huì)背景不同，很難說哪一種課堂更加優(yōu)越。

我個(gè)人認(rèn)為，一節(jié)理想的課應(yīng)該考慮三個(gè)因素：教師、學(xué)生、課堂氣氛。首先，教師的主要任務(wù)是引導(dǎo)學(xué)生學(xué)習(xí)而不是填鴨式教育。第二，課堂應(yīng)該以學(xué)生為中心。學(xué)生的興趣及要求是課堂的重點(diǎn)。此外，課堂氣氛應(yīng)該是活潑、輕松、友好并有秩序的。每一個(gè)人都要積極參與討論，充分調(diào)動(dòng)自己的主觀能動(dòng)性。

總之，一堂好的課需要協(xié)調(diào)好這三者之間的關(guān)系。
