Stocks Rally
Stocks rallied(1) today once Wall Street read the fine print accompanying the Fed’s announcement leaving interest rates alone. The Fed gave out some positive signals today saying that economic activity is beginning to firm(2). Analysts say it’s tough to tell how much of today’s rally is attributable to the Fed’s news and how much to an expectable rebound(3) following the Tuesday’s sell-off. Early on investors, dumped(4) companies they perceived to have a difficult time explaining their finances. By the bell those stocks had regained most of their losses if not all. Tyco International, one of those plunged more than $8.00 yesterday, climbed $1.20 today to 34.85. IBM up 2.55 on the day. K-Mart up 19 cents. General Electric 42 cents better. AT & T fell 36 cents to 17.45, says it expects a slight acceleration of revenue decline for the first quarter compared to last year. The Dow up 144 points to 9763, Nasdaq 20 higher. S & P 500 up 13, the Amex up 7. Ten-year bonds are yielding 5%. For Business Week, I’m Gary Nunn, ABC News.
