Cheshire 是英格蘭西部的一郡，當(dāng)?shù)爻霎a(chǎn)一種頗有特色的干酪，叫“柴郡干酪”(Cheshire cheese),曾經(jīng)一度作成象笑臉貓的形狀。另一種說法是：柴郡有位畫家，他給當(dāng)?shù)芈灭^繪畫的招牌上，都畫了一只咧著嘴笑的獅子。

艾里克•帕特里奇先生(Mr. Eric Partridge)認(rèn)為，這個成語大約從 1770 年開始就作為貶義詞使用。英國《朗曼英國成語詞典》等辭書，認(rèn)為這個成語源自維多利亞女王時代（1835--1901），英國數(shù)學(xué)家和童話作家劉易斯• 卡洛爾(Lewis Carroll,1832--1898) 在他所寫的童話《阿麗思漫游奇境記》(Alice's Adventures in Wonderland)中詳細(xì)的描述了公爵夫人家中的一只柴郡貓。《阿麗思漫游奇境記》第 6 章有段這樣的對話：

"Please,would you tell me,"said Alice a little limidly..."why your cat grins like that?" "It's a Cheshire cat,"said the Duchess,"and that's why."

卡洛爾的童話，通過虛幻離奇的情節(jié)，嘲諷了 19 世紀(jì)后半期英國的社會現(xiàn)象。《阿麗思漫游奇境記》在1865 年 7 月問世后，轟動了全英國。作者由此一舉成名。“柴郡貓”的生動想象，是否他所創(chuàng)造，有待于進(jìn)一步考證，但 to grin like a Cheshire cat 是隨著該書的風(fēng)行而被廣泛使用，應(yīng)無疑義。根據(jù)書中的描述，這個成語常用來表示 to grin broadly,showing great amusement; to laugh at nothing that is amusing;to smile widely,in such a way that on shows all one's teeth.
