Want is the whetstone of wit.

Want of wit is worse than want of wealth (or gear).

We learn not at school, but in life.

[注解]指愚者總把必須做的事拖延到最后才做,而智者一開始就認真干,直到完成。
[譯]智者一開始就認真做,愚者磨磨蹭蹭往后拖。
What we first learn, we best know.
[譯]少年所學,記憶最佳。
When a nation sins, it will have one ruler after another. But a nation will be strong and endure when it has intelligent, sensible leaders.
[注解]語出《圣經(jīng)·箴言》第28章第2節(jié)。
[譯]邦國因有罪過,君王就多更換;國有聰明靈敏的人,國必長存。
When a wise man cheats someone, he is acting like a fool. If you take bribe, you ruin your character.

[注解]beguile誘惑。sage賢人,哲人。frolic(古)嬉戲的,快樂的。serious嚴肅的,認真的。語出英國著名古典主義詩人亞歷山大·薄柏。
[譯]智者飲酒才智來,賢人哲士盡開顏。
Wisdom is a fountain of life to the wise, but trying to educate stupid people is a waste of time.
[注解]語出《圣經(jīng)·箴言》第16章第22節(jié)。
[譯]人有智慧就有生命的源泉,企圖教育愚昧人是浪費時間。
Wisdom is more valuable than jewels; nothing you could want can compare with it.

[注解]指世上沒有足智多謀到不受欺騙的人。wile詭計,奸計。
[譯]智者也會受蒙騙;智者也有上當時。
Wise men care not for what they cannot have.
[譯]智者對自己得不到的東西并不在乎;智者遇事豁達大度,即使有智力局限,也能達觀處事。
Wise men have their mouths in their hearts, fools have their hearts in their mouths.
[譯]智者嘴在心里,愚者心在嘴里。
Wise men learn by other men's mistakes; fools, by their own.
[注解]出自拉丁語。
[譯]智者能以別人的錯誤為借鑒;而愚者只吸取自身錯誤的教訓。
Wise men love truth, whereas fools shun it.
[注解]shun回避,躲開。
[譯]智者愛真理,愚者卻回避。
Wise men propose, and fools determine.
[注解]determine(古)按規(guī)定目標行事。
[譯]智者出謀劃策,愚者照章辦事。
Wise men will gain an honourable reputation, but stupid men will only add to their own disgrace.
[注解]語出《圣經(jīng)·箴言》第3章第35節(jié)。
[譯]智慧人必承受尊榮,愚昧人高升也成為羞辱。
Wit once bought is worth twice taught. (or Wit bought is better than wit taught.)
[譯]付出代價長一智,勝過別人教兩次;親身體驗勝過老師教導。
