百喻經(jīng)之七六: 田夫思王女喻

　　THE FARMER LONGED FOR THE PRINCESS

　　昔有田夫，游行城邑，見國王女顏貌端正，世所希有。晝夜想念，情不能已。思與交通，無由可遂。顏色瘀黃，即成重病。諸所親見，便問其人：“何故如是?”答親里言：“我昨見王女，顏貌端正，思與交通，不能得故，是以病耳。我若不得，必死無疑。”

　　Once upon a time, there was a farmer who went to the city and saw the princess who was very graceful. He found she was quite a rare beauty. Afterwards he thought of nothing else but the princess day and night. Since he could not find a way to have a talk with liar, he became yellow and fell very ill from his love-sickness. His parents and relatives asked him what had happened to him. He replied, "Yesterday I saw the graceful princess with whom I would like to get acquainted. But I've been unable to think of a way. This is why I have fallen ill. I'll die soon!"

　　諸親語言：“我當為汝作好方便，使汝得之，勿得愁也。”后日見之，便語之言：“我等為汝，便為是得。唯王女不欲。”田夫聞之，欣然而笑，謂呼必得。

　　The parents and relatives said, "We'll find a way. Don't be so upset." Two days later, they said to him, "We have found away. Unfortunately, she didn't like it at all." Upon hearing these words the farmer got very happy and said with a big smile to other people that she would come to him if he sent for her.

　　世間愚人，亦復如是。不別時節(jié)春、秋、冬、夏，便于冬時擲種土中，望得果實，徒喪其功，空無所獲，芽、莖、枝、葉，一切都失。世間愚人，修習少福，謂為具足，便謂菩提已可證得。如彼田夫，希望王女。

　　This is also held to be true with the stupid men of the world. A stupid man knows of no seasons of spring, summer, autumn and winter. He sows the land with seeds in winter hoping that they will grow. He gains nothing except wasting his energy in vain. All are lost as buds, stalks branches and leaves. Getting a little merit, the stupid of the world are satisfied with what they think are the attainment of Enlightenment, like the farmer who longed for the princess.

　　白話：

　　曾有一個農夫，至京城游玩，見國王的女兒顏貌端正，世所稀有，便晝夜想念，情不能已?？释c她接近，又沒有路徑可以達到，便思念得面色瘀黃，遂即成了重病。親友鄰里便問他為什么會這樣，他答道：「我往日見及國王的女兒，顏貌端正，渴想著與她接近，不能辦到的緣故，這就病了。我若是得不到，必死無疑?！褂H友說道：「我們會替你想好辦法的，讓你得到她，先不要愁呵!」大家日后見了他，對他說：「我們?yōu)槟阆氲霓k法以為是可以得到的，只是公主不肯?！固锓蚵犃?，欣然而笑，高呼著必可得到的，必可得到的。

　　世上的愚人也是這樣，不分別春夏秋冬的時節(jié)，便在冬天將種子擲撒土中，祈望得到果實，卻是白白浪費功夫，一無所獲，芽莖枝葉之類都不會有。世間的愚人修習了一點點福業(yè)，便以為圓滿具足了，菩提道果已可證得，就像那位渴望得到公主的田夫一樣。
