伊迪絲·西特維爾（Edith Sitwell，1887-1964），英國(guó)二十世紀(jì)有影響的女詩人。早年受到艾略特現(xiàn)代主義詩風(fēng)影響。1916-1921年，她編輯文學(xué)年刊《輪》，與具有戀舊情緒的《喬治詩歌》針鋒相對(duì)。她的詩在形式方面具有實(shí)驗(yàn)性和創(chuàng)新性，在音韻和語言方面獨(dú)具創(chuàng)造力。20年代，她創(chuàng)作了一批富有新意的作品，引起批評(píng)界關(guān)注。二戰(zhàn)期間，她的詩作把對(duì)戰(zhàn)爭(zhēng)、社會(huì)、人類命運(yùn)的思考同她的敏銳觀察和感受溶為一體，創(chuàng)作了多首廣為人們稱道的詩作，包括《雨還在下著》、《該隱的影子》（1947）等。

陰暗如人的世界，烏黑如我們的損失——
Dark as the world of man, black as our loss—
盲目如一千九百四十個(gè)釘子
Blind as the nineteen hundred and forty nails

Nurtures its greed , that worm with the brow of Cain.

下到釘在十字架上的饑餓者腳上。
At the feet of the Starved Man hung upon the Cross.
每日每夜釘在那里的基督呵，對(duì)我們發(fā)發(fā)慈悲吧——
Christ that each day, each night, nails there, have mercy on us—
對(duì)財(cái)主和拉撒路也發(fā)發(fā)慈悲吧：
On Dives and on Lazarus:
在雨點(diǎn)下面，疥瘡和黃金是同一個(gè)東西。
Under the Rain the sore and the gold are as one.

Still falls the Blood from the Starved Man's wounded Side:

He bears in His Heart all wounds, —those of the light that died,
那最后微弱的火花
The last faint spark
閃在自我謀殺者心間，可悲的、不理解一切的“黑暗”的創(chuàng)傷，
In the self-murdered heart, the wounds of the sad uncomprehending dark,
被狗撕咬的熊的創(chuàng)傷，——
The wounds of the baited bear, —
瞎眼的、哭泣的熊呵，無助的軀體還要
The blind and weeping bear whom the keepers beat
挨看守人的揍……被追獵的野兔的淚。
On his helpless flesh… the tears of the hunted hare.

Still falls the Rain—
于是——哦，我要躍向上帝：誰把我拉下來——
Then—O lle leape up to my God: who pulles me doune—
瞧，瞧，基督的血在蒼天涌流：
See, see where Christ's blood streames in the firmament :
血從那個(gè)被我們釘在樹上的額頭流出，
It flows from the Brow we nailed upon the tree
深入到垂死的、干渴的心靈，
Deep to the dying, to the thirsting heart
這包容著全世界的大火的心靈——因痛苦而被染黑了，
That holds the fires of the world, —dark-smirched with pain
像凱撒的桂冠。
As Caesar's laurel crown.
于是一個(gè)人的聲音響起來，祂像人的心
Then sounds the voice of One who like the heart of man
曾經(jīng)是躺在牲口中間的嬰兒——
Was once a child who among beasts has lain—
