哀　歌

THRENOS

美，真，圣潔的情操，

Beauty, truth, and rarity,

單純之中蘊(yùn)含的崇高，

Grace in all simplicity ,

已化為灰燼，火滅煙消。

Here enclos'd in cinders lie.

如今鳳凰的巢穴是死亡；

Death is now the phoenix' nest;

斑鳩的無(wú)限忠誠(chéng)的胸膛

And the turtle's loyal breast

休憩在不朽的永恒之鄉(xiāng)。

To eternity doth rest,

他們也沒(méi)有留下后裔，

Leaving no posterity :

并非他們有什么痼疾，

Twas not their infirmity ,

只因他們是童貞的結(jié)縭。

It was married chastity.

真，有表象，沒(méi)有真相，

Truth may seem, but cannot be;

美，靠炫耀，本色消亡，

Beauty brag , but 'tis not she;

真，美，雙雙被埋葬。

Truth and beauty buried be.

讓兩只非真即美的飛禽

To this urn let those repair

一同進(jìn)入這只骨灰瓶；

That are either true or fair;

為兩只死鳥，請(qǐng)哀告神明！

For these dead birds sigh a prayer.
