Sonnet on the Sale by Auction of Keats' Love Letters

These are the letters which Endymion wrote

To one he loved in secret, and apart.

And now the brawlers of the auction mart

Bargain and bid for each poor blotted note,

Ay! for each separate pulse of passion quote

The merchant's price: I think they love not Art

Who break the crystal of a poet's heart,

That small and sickly eyes may glare or gloat.



Is it not said that many years ago,

In a far Eastern town some soldiers ran

With torches through the midnight, and began

To wrangle for mean raiment, and to throw

Dice for the garments of a wretched man,

Not knowing the God's wonder, or His woe?

有感于濟(jì)慈情書被拍賣

這是恩狄彌翁寫下的一批情書，

獻(xiàn)給他秘戀而隔離的意中人。

而今，拍賣場(chǎng)喧鬧的人們

為每一張墨跡斑駁的信箋競(jìng)價(jià)，

唉！對(duì)激情每一次獨(dú)立的搏動(dòng)

開出交易的價(jià)格。他們并不愛藝術(shù)，

卻擊碎了詩(shī)人的一顆水晶心，

那些病態(tài)的小眼睛藉此可以藐視。



莫非不曾聽說(shuō)，許多年以前，

在遙遠(yuǎn)東方的小鎮(zhèn)，幾個(gè)士兵

舉著火把穿過(guò)子夜，開始

為劣質(zhì)布衣而爭(zhēng)吵，拋擲骰子，

只為獲取可憐人的一件長(zhǎng)袍，

卻渾然不覺上帝的詫異和傷心？
