The Theatre at Argos

Nettles and poppy mar each rock-hewn seat:

No poet crowned with olive deathlessly

Chants his glad song, nor clamorous Tragedy

Startles the air; green corn is waving sweet

Where once the Chorus danced to measures fleets;

Far to the East a purpls stretch of sea,

The cliffs of gold that prisoned Danae;

And desecrated Argos at my feet.



No season now to mourn the days of old,

A nation's shipwreck on the rocks of Time,

Or the dread storms of all-devouring Fate,

For now the peoples clamour at our gate,

The world is full of plague and sin and crime,

And God Himself is half-dethroned for Gold!

阿耳戈斯的劇院

蕁麻與罌粟損毀了石制的座椅：

沒(méi)有帶著橄欖枝的詩(shī)人不歇地

吟唱他歡快的歌，也沒(méi)有喧囂的悲劇

震驚四座；綠色的麥苗甜蜜地?fù)u曳

這里曾是合唱隊(duì)?wèi)?yīng)和節(jié)拍起舞的地方；

遠(yuǎn)離東方的是紫色的海岸線，

達(dá)那厄被囚禁的金色懸崖；

被褻瀆的阿耳戈斯在我的腳下。



現(xiàn)在來(lái)悲嘆古昔的歲月不合時(shí)令，

一艘民族的海船撞上時(shí)間的暗礁，

或遭遇吞噬一切的命運(yùn)之恐怖風(fēng)暴，

所以，而今人們?cè)谖覀兊拇箝T(mén)前喧鬧，

這世界充滿了瘟疫、罪孽和惡行，

哦，上帝也因?yàn)榻疱X(qián)丟失了半個(gè)寶座！
