Bottom-feeder 當(dāng)名詞，在美國(guó)文獻(xiàn)中多指律師、迎合低級(jí)趣味的節(jié)目或節(jié)目主持人、愛(ài)撿便宜的人、追求八卦新聞的記者及作家等；bottom feeding 是形容詞，通常形容上述名詞。二詞語(yǔ)氣輕蔑損人，但在正式社交場(chǎng)所仍多見(jiàn)使用。

bottom-feeder 用以諷刺人、損人

1. bottom-feeder 迎合低級(jí)趣味的人，揭瘡疤者、追尋八卦新聞?wù)?

A. It may sound fishy，but the bottom-feeder of bottom-feeders is dining on caviar1 these days. “The Jerry Springer2 Show，” the talk show that boasts more bleeps3，bozos and busted noses4 than any hour on TV，is watching5 its audience ratings skyrocket.

這聽(tīng)起來(lái)奇怪，最迎合低級(jí)趣味的杰里斯賓哥電視節(jié)目近來(lái)廣受歡迎，且自詡較其他任何一小時(shí)節(jié)目中的臟話、耍寶及打架為多，收視率一飛沖天。

注：

1. dining on caviar 以“食用魚(yú)子醬”喻“廣受歡迎”。

2. Springer 史賓哥，53歲，曾任辛辛那提市市長(zhǎng)，于1993年開(kāi)始播出自己的電視節(jié)目。

3. bleeps 美國(guó)電視臺(tái)不準(zhǔn)播出七個(gè)臟字穢語(yǔ)(請(qǐng)參見(jiàn)附錄(三)），都以嗶嗶聲(bleep)代替之。

4. busted noses 以“打斷的鼻子”喻“打架”。

5. watch 此動(dòng)詞+賓語(yǔ)(its audience ratings 觀眾收視率)后，可跟動(dòng)詞原形(root form) skyrocket 作賓語(yǔ)補(bǔ)足語(yǔ)。這樣的動(dòng)詞為數(shù)不多，如see，hear，have，get，make……等。

A. The press，meanwhile，characterized me1 as a bottom-feeder in the pay of a right-wing rag2 and moved on to a less seamy scandal，3 Whitewater. Case closed.4

2. rag (俚)報(bào)紙。布氏調(diào)查克林頓的緋聞時(shí)，于1993年十二月在右翼報(bào)上發(fā)表一文，引一名阿肯色州警員(trooper)的話說(shuō)，當(dāng)時(shí)任阿肯色州州長(zhǎng)的克林頓在一名小姐(即Paula Jones)面前有暴露之嫌，成為轟動(dòng)一時(shí)的州警員揭發(fā)緋聞案(戲稱 Troopergate)。

3. less seamy scandal 指當(dāng)年不涉及桃色的阿肯色州白水鎮(zhèn)土地開(kāi)發(fā)案(Whitewater)。

4. Case closed 諷刺新聞界喜新厭舊，有了白水案的新發(fā)現(xiàn)，就疏遠(yuǎn)了 Troopergate 的緋聞案。

2. Bottom-feeding 迎合低格調(diào)的，死要錢的

A. Philadelphia’s WIP “deals almost exclusively in opinion， innuendo and rumor，” writes SI’s1 Austin Murphy. The station “panders to bottom-feeding listeners….”

1. the hour 指美國(guó) Pax有線電視臺(tái)的 Chicken Soup for the Soul(平安快樂(lè)之道)。按在美國(guó)，素以雞湯作為輕微疾病的家庭良藥，此處喻“凈化靈魂的良方”。

2. Dateline (子午線)美國(guó)電視眾多新聞特寫(xiě)節(jié)目之一。

3. clip specials 指穿插低級(jí)趣味鏡頭的新聞特寫(xiě)節(jié)目。

4. Fox 指由澳洲媒體大亨默多克(Rupert Murdoch)經(jīng)營(yíng)的美國(guó)福克斯電視臺(tái)。

A. Keating1，visibly angered by the suit2，said it had been filed by a “bottom-feeding lawyer.” He…expressed concerns news of the suit would cause other possible donors to withhold future donations. “This lawyer never even bothered to talk to me，” Keating said… Levine3 bristled at being called a “bottom-feeder，”4 saying that he not only received no money for representing Powers5，but that he paid for the filing fees.

5. Powers 鮑威爾，為本案之女性原告，指控州長(zhǎng)對(duì)救濟(jì)金處理不公。
